Sleep and Grow Rich

Sleep and Grow Rich

Several years ago, this 1962 ebook by Ben Sweetland landed on my desktop. The title reminded me of the great Napoleon Hills’ masterpiece “Think and Grow Rich” but I didn’t think about it much at the time and saved it for future reference.

Grow Rich While You SleepLast Saturday, while searching my hard drive for something interesting to read, I bumped into the dusty old file and decided to see what the books was about. Truth is, I hadn’t heard of Ben Sweetland before, so I started with a search to see what I’d discover.

Ben Sweetland was a well-known psychologist and a famous lecturer throughout the United States. He was also known for his syndicated column called “The Marriage Clinic” and for several books he’d written, including “Add Years to Your Life and Life to Your Years”, “Fourteen Golden Secrets”, “I Will” and “I Can”… with such positive titles, I decided to dive into reading the little ebook I had found in my virtual shelf.

As I started reading  “Grow Rich While You Sleep” the main idea of the ebook became obvious…

The mastering of your success depends on your creative mind.

However, something else caught my attention… Dr. Sweetland placed an emphasis on building a success consciousness by giving clear assignments to the creative mind, so it can go to work while we sleep!

Then, he actually gives the tested commands he used himself throughout his life to achieve the success he did! He describes how he used this technique to tap into his creative mind and came up with solutions to every single problem he had, all while he slept!

He also states that once you learn how to implant these commands properly in your creative mind, your conscious mind will be forced to comply with the given order every single time.

Wow! This means that our future is shaped mainly during our sleeping hours!

This very comprehensive ebook teaches you how to attain not just material riches, but psychological, spiritual, physical and mental riches, as well.

Of course, if we are going to use this power, we must sleep peacefully and soundly. As an added bonus, Mr. Sweetland discusses the main reasons of sleeplessness (by the way, those reasons still apply today!) and gives us solutions to induce a deep and restful sleep naturally, something we can all benefit from living in today’s fast-paced world!

I was also very pleased to find a series of precise 1, 2, 3, ‘do-this-then-that’ exercises throughout several chapters. You see, according to Dr. Sweetland, achievement begins with thought but ‘knowing’ this is not enough… what good does it make to learn that your thoughts lean toward negativity more often than not?

sleep and grow richDr. Sweetland not only helps you discover what your thoughts are, but goes on to guide you to change the negativity with specific instructions. Did you know that we work harder at being a failure than at being a success?  This is not only strange but opposite to what most of us believed. However, once you finish chapter #6 (and the story of Joe Benson) it will all make sense to you.

Amongst my favorite chapters are “Why you are like you are”, “You are twice as good as you think you are”, and the one titled “Developing a Health Consciousness” is like it had been written for me!

My jaw fell to the floor when I read about concise proof of mind over matter examples. Here’s is one… Would you believe it if I told you that blond people who lost sight early in life will look young longer than those with sight? This is because their minds hold the picture of how they looked the last time they saw their reflection! Amazing, isn’t it?

The ebook is filled with real life examples and thought provoking concepts, such as the unreality of money, how rich is rich?, and money is a myth, which helps you gain a new understanding of money and a new awareness of true riches. (This section deserves a high-five, for sure.)

The whole book is both, inspirational and practical. A true gem. The more you read, the more drawn and inspired you’ll become… but if you were to ask me, what you will learn in chapter #12 is definitely priceless… The step-by-step process to give precise assignments to your creative mind while you sleep. This chapter alone is worth the price of the entire ebook and so much more…. no worries, though. The ebook sells for peanuts if compared to the content it delivers.

I could go on and share many more priceless chunks and bites of this ebook, but I’d be missing brilliant points too, so I rather let you see the complete ‘table of contents‘ and decide for yourself how you can Learn to Think Your Way to Riches and Success!

Towards the end of the book, Dr. Sweetland asks himself this question… Would it be possible for an average man or woman to read this book and then, by following its suggestions, turn the tide of mediocrity to a life of happiness and opulence?

His answer was a resounding YES!

If that is not motivating, I don’t know what is! “Grow Rich While You Sleep” covers nearly everything you need to know about the Ancient Wealth Secrets that can turbo-charge your earnings potential into overdrive… AND it points out the steps to do it. The best part is that once you get the steps in order, the rest happens while you sleep!

I invite you to gain a new and improved rich consciousness with this ‘no-fluff-all-wisdom’ insightful ebook! If you haven’t yet clicked on the links above, get it here…   Grow Rich While You Sleep!

May You Grow Rich as You Sleep!

Success Mindset

Develop a

Success Mindset

You’ve heard it before. To succeed at anything, you must develop a Success Mind Set but what exactly is “mind set” and how can we use it to our advantage?

Mindset is best described as the mental attitude that takes shape based on life experiences, environment, education and the ideas of the people we interact with the most.

Your mindset influences your interpretation of life’s events and predetermines the way in which you commonly respond to situations. Eventually, your frequent responses settle and become habits, and they give rise to your predominant state of mind.

People with a positive mindset tend to find opportunity in every problem. They are problem solvers by nature while those with a negative mindset feel as if the world is collapsing under their feet every time they encounter an unpleasant life experience.

Obviously, these people’s attitudes are not conductive to creating a state of stability, optimism, well-being and success. For them, a small thing can translate into a huge problem, it’s hard for them to think outside the box, they can’t seem to find solutions, they become easily confused and overwhelmed, and they seem to live in a state of constant anxiety, stress and crisis. Life seems like a real burden for them!

Interestingly, it is not that these people have out of the ordinary, tougher circumstances or a mountain of unusual problems as compared to their counterparts.

You’ve probably met someone that becomes really anxious at something you wouldn’t even consider a big deal. These individuals don’t have the proper mindset to go through the ups and downs of life without an enormous amount of stress. Usually, they are clueless of the fact that while they have no control of circumstances, they do have total control of how they react to those circumstances.

Their thoughts are the starting point for solving -or not- every problem in life.

In short, having a “Can Do” attitude is the main difference between people with a mindset for success and people who live in confusion and feel crushed at the slightest sign of trouble.

Mind set is directly linked to Thoughts, and… Thoughts become Things.

Here is an example to better understand this concept… Take a look at the chair you’re sitting on while reading this article. Before it existed as a physical object, it was conceived in somebody’s imagination. After that initial idea, the thought of building it came to mind and -eventually- after planing and acting on the idea, it was made a reality. That person had the correct mindset, one of creativity and expectancy of positive outcome.

Now imagine if the person thinking about that chair believed it was going to be a huge problem or insurmountable task task to build it, that nobody would like to sit on chairs, that it was a silly idea, that people were better off without chairs, etc. etc… with the wrong mindset, the list of excuses could be unlimited!

Realize that every single thing ever -tangible or not- created by humans, either positive or negative, started as a thought in someone’s mind. Without the proper mindset and optimistic outlook, we’d still be living in caves and sitting on rocks!

Thus, you are the result of your most common thoughts, the ones you have had throughout your lifetime which have brought about very specific results. While we all have positive and negative thoughts throughout our lives, the life experience we manifest at any given time represents the sum our most predominant thoughts.

Thoughts are powerful indeed. As conscious beings, we have the privilege to control them –by choice. Unfortunately, this is not what most people do. They unconsciously allow their minds to jump from one thought to the next allowing their thoughts to rule their lives without even being aware of it.

But, the important question here is… now that you know what’s going on between your ears, what kind of thoughts will you choose? And most importantly, what kind of life will you choose to lead?

Will you live a life controlled by random thoughts or will you choose your thoughts carefully and develop a success mindset on purpose?

When you get a hold of your thoughts you have the power to create wonderful things in your life, all by just taking command, training and instructing your mind to think properly.

You get to choose what you think!!

Thoughts can be changed and conformed to our advantage, and with this awareness we can develop the right attitude and the mindset needed to succeed at anything we want.

You now you know… you can direct your thoughts at will. All of a sudden the clichéd phrase Success is a MindSet makes perfect sense. Doesn’t it?

“What lies behind us, and what lies before us
are tiny matters, compared to what lies within us.”

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

OK, so success is a state of mind but… is that all we need to achieve goals in life?

Many people still claim that more than mindset, success is only the natural result of proper planning, actual preparation, and focused, relentless action.

This is actually true, but there are a number of exceptions that oppose this common belief. If you have ever wondered why two people with the exact same circumstances and with similar goals don’t get the same results, you know that there must be something less obvious that contributed to the success of one and the failure of the other.

Do you believe it has to do with resolve or determination, or maybe with timing or mere luck? It is true that many elements play a part in it; however, more often than not, the main factor is what is going on inside their head. Adopting a success mindset is the determining factor which makes a world of difference between success and failure, regardless of other circumstances. What’s more, some people will achieve success even though the circumstances seem to be all against them.

Keep on reading the next section by clicking on the link below. You’ll get to discover the MUST haves to develop a success mindset.

Job Interview

Successful Interviewing Tips to

Find the Job of Your Dreams!

You can call it anything you want… “laid off,” “let go” or “downsized”… at the end, it all means the same. What matters the most is the emotional turmoil that goes through a person’s mind once the news sinks in, from self-esteem to relationships to actually being able to pay the bills, the enormous burden can be felt in every area of life.

I don’t have to tell you about statistics. We are all quite familiar with the common challenges and the problematic times we are facing worldwide. But…. if you have lost your job, I’m going to ask you to read this article as you may find a couple of bits of useful information to use in your next job interview. So, step back for a little bit, and try to see things from a different perspective.

Re-focus your mind even if for a few minutes and allow yourself to see this experience as a blessing in disguise; as a time to re-evaluate your talents and finally have the opportunity to be, do and have whatever you want in your life. The Internet is filled with countless stories of people who thought everything was lost when they got laid off, only to discover that it was the best thing that happened to them a few weeks or months down the road.

In other words, now is the time to get courageous, go out, get a job interview, or step up to start a new and exciting career. Luckily for us these days, becoming an entrepreneur not as difficult as it once was!

You literally have thousands of resources at your fingertips to help you land a job interview for the job of your dreams, and if you are willing (or able) to relocate, your options are multiplied. Besides the common sources such as the local papers (especially weekend editions), your local library and the multiple employment search engines in the Internet, you may want to consider hiring a Head Hunter to help you get job interviews that match your talents, education, and goals. Networking groups, the gym and even your friends are good sources too. Don’t be afraid to reach out in a big way!

Not sure what you want to do or how you can take your experience into a new career or business venture? You may want to consider hiring a Life Coach to help you explore your options. What I want to convey here is that regardless of how terrible the horizon looks at this time, there are always better days ahead. Trust me on this.

I realize how frightening this situation can be (I have been in your shoes myself!), especially if you had been employed at the same place for several years. Hitting the job market again can be intimidating, for sure! So, I’m going to take you through the basic points so soon enough, you can land the job of your dreams.

Your Resume

Once you’ve found a job that you are interested in, it’s time to update and submit your resume with the goal of getting called for a job interview.

This first step may seem like a huge task, especially if you had been employed for a long time before you were let go. Thus, remember that your resume is the first item to represent you and sell you to a potential employer even before you meet face to face. It should reflect who you are in an extremely positive light. It should make you stand out among other applicants and urge the person in charge of hiring to want to call you first!

Also know that a resume should not be a “one-size-fits-all” kind of deal. In other words, you should plan to modify your resume and cover letter (more on this in a bit) according to the specific position you are applying to. There are plenty of sites and services to help you create a winning resume. A comprehensive search and dedicated time will get you writing your resume profesionally and relatively fast. You may also consider hiring a professional resume writer.

Your Cover Letter

In most cases, you will also need a cover letter to accompany your resume. In general, the cover letter should be as concise and to the point as possible. Don’t ramble on and on, let your resume do the talking. The cover letter is just a basic introduction to your resume where you can include your main qualities that make you the perfect candidate for the position you are applying for. Above it all, use very positive language and be concise. Some experts recommend using bullet points. I believe it is a good idea as it draws attention to your main talents first.

If you don’t have a specific person to address the letter to, you should address it to “Ladies and Gentlemen”. DO NOT address it to “To Whom It May Concern”. That is considered unprofessional and very non-businesslike.

Just as with the resume, you should match your cover letter to the specific position you are applying for. Think about your talents and experience and match them to the specifics of the position. Be truthful and always proofread extensively to make sure that there are no typographical errors and that your punctuation and grammar is all correct.

Preparing for the Job Interview

A good, solid resume and cover letter will get you a job interview. At that point, you’ll be given the opportunity to shine and stand out from other applicants. And… how do you do that? Preparation is key in the process. Being prepared for a job interview includes two main points: knowing about the industry and your prospective employer, and knowing yourself. It means paying attention to details like personal appearance, punctuality, and demeanor. And it means feeling confident about your interviewing skills. Do your homework and be prepared!

You may want to prepare by thinking of a couple of instances where you handled difficult situations successfully. They may ask you this. Also, make a list some of your attributes, and have those present in your mind to answer specific questions. Talk to former co-workers with whom you worked closely. Ask them to list some work related traits about you that they most admired. While you are at it, ask them if you can list them as references.

Try to find some faults as well just in case they come up as questions. By studying your faults, you will be able to choose one that is somewhat innocuous and turn it around into a positive. For example, if you are obsessively organized, this could be presented as a fault but most employers look at organizational skills as assets not liabilities. So in an interview, I would tell them “one of my shortcomings was that I wanted to be too organized.”

Practice how you will answer possible questions during your job interview. You want to be perceived somewhat spontaneous, but you also want to appear self-confident and professional. The way to do that is to rehearse, not exactly what you will say, but how you will say it. This will increase your confidence tremendously.

A great method is to rehearse in front of a mirror. Study your posture, the way you make eye contact, the tone of your voice, and your body language. Ask a friend to do pretend interviews with you. The more you repeat a scenario, the more comfortable you will begin to feel with it.

What To Wear

First, you must dress properly. Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to wear a suit for a job interview or a classy dress if you are a woman. Go with something simple, in a neutral tone. The more conservative your field, the more conservative your suit should be.

It’s also a good idea to match your interview attire to the prospective job. If you are applying for a job working on a warehouse floor, you will look out of place wearing a formal suit. Keeping that in mind, dress a little better than you would for a day at work and make sure your clothes are neat and clean. A good, classic style and cut for a suit is a good choice since it’s appropriate for many situations. Do not wear jeans unless the job you are applying calls for it.

In all instances, wear closed-toe shoes. Sandals are never appropriate for a job interview. And, of course… sneakers are not appropriate either.

If you are a woman, don’t wear an excessive amount of jewelry or makeup. You want to make a good impression at your job interview without distractions and just with your personality and qualifications. If you have long hair, it’s better to wear it up.

You’ll want to bring an extra copy of your resume along with your reference sheet. Leave the backpack at home. A woman can carry a small to medium sized handbag. A man can carry a briefcase if he wishes. A folder or a portfolio are good options as well.

The Job Interview

Once at the interview, you are going to be asked many questions by your potential employer. They will ask about you, your education and past experience. In particular, they’ll want to know about your strengths and weaknesses, and what you did to problem solve when a difficult situation occurred. If you prepared as suggested above, you’ll do great!

Speak slowly and clearly. Pause before you answer a question. Your answers will seem less rehearsed and it will give you a chance to collect your thoughts. Keep in mind that a very brief pause may seem like an eternity to you but it is not.

Since the interviewer’s job is to make sure that not only your skills, but that your personality is a good match as well, you must establish rapport with the person interviewing you. That begins the instant you walk in the door. Let the interviewer set the tone. For example, if the interviewer is speaking softly, so should you.

It’s alright for you to show your true personality, but be careful not to go over-board. Humor may help relax both, you and the person doing the job interview and may help you communicate much easier; but… use caution with humor and never joke about race, politics, faith or anything of that nature.

As you may know, body language gives more away about us than speech. Eye contact is very important but make sure it looks natural. A smiling, relaxed face is very inviting. Hands resting casually in your lap rather than arms folded across your chest also is more inviting. If you normally move your hands around a lot when you speak, tone it down a bit. You don’t want to look too stiff, but you don’t want to look like you’re a bundle of nervous energy.

After The Interview

After the interview, it is essential to follow up with a “Thank You” note. This serves two purposes. First, it tells the employer that you are grateful for their time and the opportunity to inverview. You want to do the polite thing by sending out a note thanking them for that. Also, a thank you note brings you back to mind which can be good if they are close to making a decision on who to hire.

And then, you are done with your part. It is now waiting time. You may get a call for a second interview or you will get a call to discuss salary and starting day. Congratulations!

If you are not chosen for the job, you may want to make a phone call to the person who interviewed you and ask why you weren’t chosen for the position.

Simply explain to the interviewer that you are looking for ways to improve yourself for your next job interview and would appreciate his/her input.

Above it all, do not despair. You may have to go through several job interviews until you land the job of your dreams. You may also find yourself yearning to turn a beloved hobby into a business. Many people have done this. Like them, you can Become A Successful Entrepreneur and realize great success. Remember… it is YOUR life and YOUR time to decide what to do… feeling fulfilled will allow you to live a happier life. Isn’t this what life is all about?

Sleep Learning

Sleep Learning

Facts and Myths

Sleep learning is a technique that helps you harness the power of your subconscious while you sleep. When practiced, it facilitates the learning of new skills, foreign languages, new concepts, and several other self-help  improvements that you may want to implement on a particular area of your life.

Sleep learning -also called hypnopaedia– is not a new concept. In fact, it dates back to the 1930’s and it became more known after Aldous Huxley’s 1932 novel titled “Brave New World“, a fictional story of a Polish boy that was able to recite an entire radio broadcast in perfect English after a radio receiver had been left on during his sleep.

Novels aside, sleep learning has been highly debated and associated with ambiguity mainly because there have been conflicting theories about it. So the question remains… is it really possible to absorb information as you sleep? Can you truly learn new concepts, enhance your memory and learn by utilizing your mind’s full potential… all while you sleep?

Between 1955 and 1968, several studies indicated that it is very possible to learn during sleep when these 3 factors are in place:

  • The suggestions are aligned with the intention to reach a certain goal. This can be done successfully through subliminal messages.
  • The suggestions are received at the right time; during the REM sleep episodes of wakefulness that occur throughout the night or during alpha wave activity (alpha patterns are a normal part of REM sleep, they induce a semi-arousal period offering an optimal opportunity for learning), and…
  • The individual fully agrees with the suggestions and intention to participate.

Because of this findings, it was determined that hypnopaedia can be successfully used as a secondary learning method that supports daytime learning. It also seems to increase the speed of learning during daytime hours, a very useful skill for High School students and working adults alike.

In more recent studies, sleep has been associated with learning and memory enhancementSleep learning seems to hook procedural memories, which aid in learning new skills. It is thanks to procedural memories that you can master a tune on the piano, a chess strategy or a video game.

Thus, the answer is… yes, sleep learning is not only possible, but very helpful; however, there are some myths that need debunking before we proceed.

Here are the two main misguided beliefs about subliminal sleep learning

  • It won’t introduce knowledge directly. It won’t work by implanting information and facts into your brain like if it was a tape recorder. In other words, don’t expect to wake up speaking French if you have never studied it before. Conscious learning must take place during waking hours for sleep learning to work as an enhancer. Only then, it will help you take in data easier and faster.
  • It doesn’t work overnight or immediately. Like many other things that must be learned, practice makes perfect. It is a process in which the message sinks into your brain slowly as you listen often. With each session you become more sharp-witted and focused as your ability to learn starts improving until you absorb information quicker and more naturally.

The Benefits of Subliminal Sleep Learning

So now you know it. Sleep learning is not magical, mysterious or miraculous, and it’s certainly not instantaneous either.

However, more people are using it successfully as they learn about it. There are many reasons why it may be a good idea to engage in this kind of learning. Here are a few of them:

  • It is 100% non invasive. When used as indicated, the messages sink into your mind effortlessly while you sleep. This makes it easy to use where no additional action is needed from you. This is attractive for many as their lifestyle and routine doesn’t have to change. You can play the album at night and won’t interfere with your normal daytime activities.
  • You will experience gradual transformation, and it will support the actions you take.
  • It will facilitate congruence between your subconscious and your conscious minds, so you go about your actions in a way that is conducive to the achievement of your goals. You will be tapping into more of your natural abilities through your right brain and your left brain.
  • Sleep Learning can provide you with a short cut to learn almost anything. More importantly, it offers a way to enhance your self-development in nearly every imaginable way.

One more reason that subliminal messages for sleep learning are becoming more popular is because they are a form of mild hypnosis in which entering trance is not needed to achieve results. When using long term, these messages create important improvements to your subconscious mind and considerably improve your ability to learn. This is not to say that hypnosis does not work or is more complicated. One technique may work better for some people than others.

Subliminal LearningIf you haven’t tried sleep learning yet then the time has come. My friends at SubliminalMP3s are giving 3 FREE subliminal audio albums you can test by yourself; one for relaxation, one for learning, and one for personal development, PLUS an ebook to learn about subliminal messages in more detail.

This is the ideal taster course in subliminal audio, and you may test all 3 of these on whilst you sleep and feel the benefits for yourself. Click on the image too the right to get this free subliminal MP3 bundle…

One case that I recently heard of, is that of a student in Budapest, Hungary, who wanted to learn English quickly so he could participate and win a BBC contest. He decided to use the sleep learning technique and was able to memorize 1026 English words in six weeks during his sleep while just reviewing the information during the day. And… He won the first prize!

There are many stories like this conducted all over the world with great success. Imagine what you could do to prepare for tests, pass exams, undertake a new career, prepare your public speaking engagements and presentations, and even for fun!

Speed Reading

The Advantages and Rewards of

Speed Reading

One of the main means for us to acquire knowledge is by reading. Since most of us are visual learners, reading is one of the most effective ways of feeding the mind with information to promote intelligent thinking, imagination, innovation and to expand our creative and intellectual edge as a whole.

An amazing fact about the human brain is that it can take in unlimited amounts of data. When you pair this with the natural appetite for knowledge that most of us have, you’ve got an awesome combination.

Since you are into Personal Growth and Self Improvement, it’s easy to assume you are fond of reading, and would love to read (and learn) more in less time. After all, with all the breakthroughs and incredible content available to us nowadays, we would need another lifetime just to learn and absorb all that we want to read!

Do you agree? If so, speed reading may be a powerful skill to acquire. In fact, this is a MUST for people that are required to read a lot in school or at work. Fortunately, the idea of attaining this skill has been widespread. I believe that this skill should be incorporated as part of the usual curriculum in schools. After all, we are living in the Information Age, and the amount of available data in all kinds of subject matters is not showing signs of slowing down anytime soon.

On the contrary, as information is being made mmore available, people from all walks of life take it upon themselves to pursue and attain a speed reading ability. Since you’ve landed on this page, most likely you are part of this group of people who recognize the importance and the advantages of acquiring this skill.

The good news is that a variety of programs exist today that allow you to learn to read extra fast without decreasing comprehension and while enhancing the retention of the information read. Some of these trainings can be quite pricey but fortunately, you do not actually have to spend hundreds of dollars to attain this talent.

Learning the basics is relatively easy- there’s almost no need for expert guidance. As with the learning of any new skill, all it takes is a good guide, the desire to learn and the commitment to practice it by yourself. As with anything else. repetition is key. It strengthens and solidifies the learning, so the more you practice it the better you get at it.

Here are a few steps on the basics of speed reading.

  • Get your vision checked

First, let’s talk about the obvious. Poor vision can be a hindrance. It strains your eyes as you read, making them become easily fatigued. So, if you believe your vision is not at 20/20, visit your ophthalmologist or optometrist and get your eyes checked. You may need prescription glasses. This will also help you with increased focus and concentration when you are reading.
  • Consider the place in which you read

Choose the right setting in which to read. If indoors, make sure the temperature is not too cold or too hot and that the area is well ventilated with fresh air. This will keep you from getting drowsy. Sit in a comfortable chair suited for reading. Your spine should be well aligned too. This alone will help make your reading more enjoyable. Also, make sure you always read in a well-lit area to prevent eye tiredness and damaging your vision; preferably with the shaft of light coming from your back (over your shoulder) and into the book.
  • Free yourself from distractions

If studying, it may be a good idea to get rid of any music in the background, unless it is a classical piece by Mozart which can help with comprehension. A busy room may also be distracting. Also, if you read outdoors, avoid places that are too noisy, such as kids playing nearby or close to a busy street or park. It’s very important to minimize distractionsto enhance comprehension and retention.
  • Be aware of your reading time

Use your watch or a clock to keep track of your reading pace. Make sure you take note of the time you start reading and the time you finish. This way you will be able to first, see how fast you read; and it’ll help you track your progress as you learn speed reading as well.
  • Get rid of fillers in the items that your read

This is one of the first things people do when trying to improve their speed reading. Try to focus your attention on the words that play a major role in every sentence. You may also want to skip words and focus on the complete thought. This ability -known as skimming– involves searching the words within the sentences for clues to meaning. This comes naturally for some, but most people require learning how to ‘skim’ though the pages.
  • Speed over comprehension

When you start at speed reading, concentrate on hastening your pace leaving comprehension for later. Try to read one page as fast as you can and then take a pause to assess what you understood. As you go about your day, try to remember what you read and evaluate your retention of information as well. With constant practice both, your comprehension and retention will sharpen by themselves.
  • Avoid re-reading

Re-reading will make you waste more time making your reading actually slower. The key is to use a guide, such as your finger or a pointer when reading a sentence. The usage of guides is called meta guiding. This will facilitate your reading and will lessen the chances of having to re-read words or sentences.
  • Do not read out loud

Sub-vocalization as it is called, can slow you down because you end up reading word per word. Aside from that, your own voice could also act as a distraction and affect your focus.
  • Practice

As the cliché goes, “Practice Makes Perfect.” You’ll need desire to learn this skill and persistence to acquire it. By applying yourself to the task of learning you’ll eventually master speed reading.  Above it all, do not stress over it. It can affect your learning curve and get you frustrated. Do it gradually, keep it fun. Before you know it you’ll get a hang of speed reading.

Do you think it’s possible to TRIPLE your reading speed in under 60 minutes?

And I know better, cause I’ve been in that position myself… I’m not saying that I wanted to die, just that it is one of the most uncomfortable situations I’ve been in, especially at the beginning of my public speaking career. I must tell you that it gets easier with time, but stage fright never goes away completely.

Speaking in front of a congregation or to a crowd may be a harrowing experience for most of us. From physical symptoms such as accelerated pulse, blushing, breaking out into a sweat, dry mouth, nausea, and blurred vision, hand tremors, amongst others, to the internal dialog we must deal with (such as “People will laugh at me“, “I won’t be able to communicate my message clearly“, or “I will make a fool of myself“), the whole experience can be nerve-wreaking!

And sometimes, when the speaker gets an extreme case of performance anxiety, the words may escape his mind and the message may end up lost without getting the point across. This situation only aggravates things. The presenter may experience feelings of insecurity, defeat, fear of being criticized and rejected, and other uncomfortable feelings that no one wants to experience and much less in public.

Regardless of how good your presentation is, how much you prepared for it, or how well meant your message is, if the delivery is random and messy, it will be invaluable.

The good news is that public speaking is an art that can be learned. It includes not just mastery of the subject, but self control and lots of practice. Being well prepared for your speaking engagement has no substitute. And, with dedication and constant practice, you will be speaking to your audience confidently in no time at all.

You must be wondering why I said above than stage fright never goes away completely. Glad you are paying attention 🙂

Well, it’s true. Stage fright never goes away 100% mostly because many factors are beyond your reach. For example, the location, equipment malfunction, your plane being late, and even the type and size of the audience you will present to, among other things. Assuming all other factors are in check, the art of public speaking has to do more with self-confidence than anything else. This means that even though stage fright might be present, the more confident you become, the easier it will be to keep the anxiety in check.

Here are some pointers for you to follow during your public speaking endeavor:

  • Practice Visualization
Several days before your speaking engagement, take time to do this exercise. Take a deep breath and relax. Now picture yourself in front of the audience delivering the speech confidently and see the crowd listening with interest, taking notes, smiling, nodding in agreement, and finally standing up and giving a round of applause as you finish. As with any visualization, the more you do it, the more effective it will be and the more confident you will feel. For a successful visualization, add details and emotion. Feel it “as if” you were already there, giving your presentation!
  • Practice Your Presentation or Topic Beforehand
Make sure your presentation is topic-oriented, appropriate for what the audience is expecting and at the level of understanding. This includes even the language you will use. Draw a small audience to practice with. Assign a timer and an evaluator during the simulation exercise. The timer records the length of your delivery so that it fits perfectly within the allotted time, giving you the opportunity to cover all of your information, and possibly leaving time for Q&A. The task of the evaluator, on the other hand, will be to check on the manner of your delivery – as well as the content of your topic.
  • Be Confident
Being a bit nervous is quite alright but over doing it can detrimental. Confidence relieves nervousness in any undertaking and especially in public speaking. You can build the confidence needed to prevent feeling anxious by working on simulated speaking sessions prior to the speaking engagement. Show your confidence by mastering your topic -not mere memorizing- but by truly knowing your topic inside-out. Everything that you need, such as equipment and technical requirements, must be set up and tested prior to the presentation day.
  • Present-ability and Body Language
First impressions count. Dress appropriately for the occasion. Comfort is a primary consideration. Clothes/suits that you don’t feel comfortable with can affect your stance and disposition on stage. Use your body language to your advantage. Present in a charismatic way that draws the attention of your audience.

Stand tall and erect (good posture), maintain eye contact, and precision-time your movements on stage.
If you need to use gestures to express a point, that is OK but don’t overdo it. Moving lightly can release some tension and nervousness. A hand in the pocket also works wonders while on stage rather than flicking your hands around. Always pay attention to your audience’s reactions in the course of your presentation. There may be signs of ineffectiveness and you may need to make little adjustments as you go to capture your audience attention back. Injecting humor when appropriate is good but make sure the topic of your presentation allows for it. Be careful not to overdo it either.

  • Speak with Conviction
Believe in every word you say. This will radiate through your audience and will manifest your confidence and mastery of the topic you are presenting. During an open forum, listen to the questions being asked and respond accordingly.

Finally, remember to take sips of water as you go to prevent dry mouth, walk from one side of the stage to the other at a nice pace, and be conscious of the fact that you are talking to an audience not an individual, so change your eye focus from one person to another as you talk.

click meHere is a secret… we know that every speaker gets nervous at one point or another, even after years of delivering speeches and lots of practice. This is because every audience is different, the topics may vary and our level of confidence changes from one day to another for a variety of reasons.

Some days we may feel more confident than others, so take that into consideration and feel at ease with this fact. It is perfectly fine to feel a bit anxious but that doesn’t have to disable you when you’re speaking in public.

Success Mindset Fundamentals

Success Mindset Fundamentals

Mindset is the term used to describe the predominant state of mind that a person has on a regular basis. I like to describe it as a day-to-day attitude that influences the outcome of our life experiences. While we all have ups and downs in life, it is what we think about, talk about, focus on, and expect, what sets our mindset in motion.

When we thinktalk and act from a positive standpoint, the natural result is the emergence of a success mindset – regardless of the task at hand.

In contrast, when we contemplate what can go wrong, we think negatively,  narrow our views and become pessimistic about our options. This leads to expectations of the worst -even if unconsciously- and that is exactly what we draw into our life experience. .. the worst possible scenarios.

Fortunately, mindset is malleable and it is based on choice -meaning, you can consciously decide to develop a success mindset by thinking positively and expecting the best on a regular basis.

Once you adopt this frame of mind, you put yourself in an advantageous position that propels you into action while anticipating and expecting a successful outcome. The rest falls into place and it is very likely you’ll end up getting your intended result. And even if you don’t succeed at first, you will take it positively, just as a lesson to learn from. You will have learned something that does not work, so you are closer to encounter what works.

Enlightening information, isn’t it? But… how does it work, precisely? How is it that a success mindset can translate into a world of difference regardless of the goal?

The following are three fundamentals that go hand in hand with a success mindset. Learn and apply them and you’ll be better able to determine if you will be successful at any given task even before you start working on it. How is that for getting in an advantageous position, or -like the saying goes- starting out on the right foot?

  • Mindset and Self-Confidence

When you lack belief in yourself and your capabilities, your self-esteem suffers. As a result, you get to feel helpless or even hopeless which makes you feel inadequate. When you doubt yourself, you see everything as pointless; you stop trying because you believe whatever you want to achieve won’t happen anyway. Obviously, this kind of mindset is a recipe for disaster, and one that must be addressed as soon as it is identified.

On the other hand, acquiring a real success mindset means you have a strong belief in yourself and your abilities. Even if you don’t know how to do a particular thing, this “Can Do” attitude will drive you to learn what you need in order to accomplish your goal.

Therefore, you must work on boosting your self-confidence so your attitude becomes that of a champion. From that point on, you’ll be willing to give anything your best shot. The best part is that the more you try, the more confident you become. And, the more confident you become, the more your self-esteem grows. This cycle can make you virtually unstoppable!

  • Mindset, Determination and Perseverance

Without a success mindset, one failure will be enough to convince you that pursuing any goal is a total waste of time. This is when determination and perseverance come into play.

Most of us won’t become a raving success the first time around, especially when the task at hand requires some sort of training or practice.

Thus, before discarding it as something impossible for you to do, acknowledge that very few things worth having or doing are achieved easily.

When you have a success mindset you become conscious of the fact that one failure is not the end of the story but just a way for you to learn what doesn’t work. In fact, when you embrace a success mindset you become aware of this truth: Failure just happens when you stop trying.

It is possible to improve your determination with thought and behavior modification tools. This type of conditioning is quite powerful as it reprograms the mind to become relentless and determined to succeed at anything.

  • Mindset and Action

Have you ever felt intimidated or inadequate because you didn’t know the best approach to a specific task? Even if you had a vague idea of the course of action, the actual action steps might have been unclear, and as a result you ended up procrastinating or self-sabotaging yourself as you hoped for an easier or less frightening way to attain your goal. Needless to say, this is the wrong mindset to embark in any endeavor.

On the contrary, when you have a true success mindset, a Can Do attitude, even when you don’t know all the right steps, you become proactive, you are determined to search and find the proper information, you are relentless until find the most effective action steps that will lead directly to your goal… you are unstoppable!

When you add inner confidence, tenacity and persistence to the mix, you will have acquired a success mindset; a sure recipe for success!
