The Art of Influencing

 

To fully understand the art of influencing others,
I like to refer to this quote…

“No man is an island”

This saying basically means that we perform better and achieve the best results when we collaborate with each other or work as a team.

Napoleon Hill referred to this as “Master Mind“, a group of people that get together to discuss and share ideas with the purpose of a better outcome for all concerned.

This concept applies to all aspects of life, including our family life, our social life, and our business matters; thus, collaboration is a very important aspect for peaceful human coexistence.

We are, after all, social beings. However, you have probably found by now that it is not always easy to get others to follow you or even acknowledge the benefit of taking a particular route together in order to achieve success.

Many people have different ideas or misguided views about what works at producing great results. This probably has to do with individual opinions and life experiences; but more often than not, it has to do with lack of know-how and vision.

Therefore, if your goal is to be successful at teamwork and achieve goals through a group effort, refining your persuasive abilities should be a priority in your “must-learn” list. Learning the art of influence persuasion is key when it comes to enticing people to follow your command in a particular thing in life.

Your ability to achieve personal and professional fulfillment is not necessarily the same ability that others in your personal and business circles have; hence you must learn the fine art of influencing towards approaching life and business from a certain angle with a precise objective in mind.

But… before we continue, let’s clarify one important point. The art of influencing otherss has nothing to do with manipulative obscure techniques to have others surrender their will and have them act as your puppets or servants for your sole benefit. Influencing others is about team work towards the achievement of a mutually beneficial goal.

Aggressive Persuation vs. Assertive Persuasion

It is definitely possible to influence people to see things from a certain angle if some amount of force is applied. This is called aggressive persuasion. It uses manipulation and pressure in a way that when people are implicitly warned, threatened, or faced with a consequence or form of punishment for doing other that what you say, they will adhere to your requests out of fear of losing something, either tangible (a job) or intangible (love.)

Therefore, aggressive persuasion creates fear, anger, resentment and other negative emotions. It is very unlikely toproduce long term results with this kind of pesuation.

There are innumerable examples of this kind of negative persuasion and aggressive influencing in history… can you think of one? Hint: You can find plenty of examples in governments based on authoritarian practices, and even closer to home if you know an authoritarian parent. No matter what example you look at, you’ll find out that in instances of aggresive persuation, the results are always short lived; i.e. revolutions, civil wars, and rebelious children, are examples of this.

Even when you have people’s best interest at heart (like in the case of your children doing their homework and chores), there is an added downfall to aggressive persuasion. When people feel pressed and are coerced in this manner they’ll often miss the point and never get to grasp why doing things your way may truly be the best approach for them. This happens despite the fact that your intentions are genuinely good!

Assertive persuasion, on the other hand, is the true art of influencing others in a positive manner and with a common and beneficial goal in mind. This type of persuasion, motivates people to eagerly collaborate with you because they are being exosed to the benefits they’ll get by following your command, even when they are consciously unaware of this!

To an extent, assertive persuasion is like gentle coercion without the consequences of non-compliance being highlighted. When people are offered the opportunity to see the positive outcome of their actions, they experience positive emotions that prompt them to embrace cooperation and this benefits everyone. The great news is that it is not difficult at all to learn assertive persuasion to influence people in this manner. All it takes is fine tuning your observation skills, learning to read people, and communicating effectively based on what you observed.

Once you’ve mastered the fine art of influencing, you will begin to experience more oomph in your life that will manifest in less struggle, more cooperation, and true teamwork in your personal and professional life.


 

Whether you want your child or life partner to grasp the importance of becoming a group prayer by cooperating in household chores, or your co-workers or employees to understand how fair delegation of duties can positively impact the end result, the art of influencing others with assertive persuation will definitely take you to new heights.

The Akashic Records

It’s been said that knowledge is power, and in the case of the Akashic Records, I couldn’t agree more… Imagine having a library of unlimited information at your disposal, documented information that contains everything that has happened or will ever happen in the whole history of human kind… what will you do with that information?

Getting secrets to re-establish your health? Attain resources to gain financial stability for yourself and your family? Getting feedback on a particular issue that can save an endangered species? Learning the reason behind a great mystery of the past? Preventing a future pandemic? Attract favorable situations to your life experience based on what you learn from your ancestors?

Truly… What would you do with such an unlimited power?

I first learned about the Akashic Records back in 2002, when I read the Biography of Edgar Cayce, a renowned American psychic who had the special ability to get information through a state of altered consciousness. This ability enabled him to download -allegedly from The Records- answers to specific questions to help people in a variety of situations, especially health related issues. Needless to say, I found it fascinating; however, I could not find too many details on the Akashic Records back then.

A few years later, I came across a different manuscript that not only mentioned the Records, but shared more detail about them. I learned that the term Akashic derives from a Sanskrit word, Akasha, which means “boundless time and space”. Akasha translates literally into ether, a substance that Wallace D. Wattles referred to as the ‘Formless Stuff‘ or ‘Original Substance‘ from which the Universe was made of –but not all of it was used in forming the Universe. The spaces within, from and in between the things of the visible matter are also permeated with this ‘stuff’, making it the raw material of everything, everywhere… (ref. The Science of Getting Rich, chapter 3, 1910)

Thus, the Akashic Records are a component of this ether; they are just in the unseen; in that part of the invisible Universe that is all around us. In these Records, every single thing that has happened and will happen has been documented, just like a mega history book that encompasses ALL times.

The Akashic Records can be described as a mega computer or huge file cabinet where every thought, emotion, intention, and action ever experienced by human kind has been documented.

Other names for Akashic Records are ‘The Book of Life‘ or ‘Heavenly Library‘. By these names we can determine that these Records have a powerful influence over the present day. Deeds, emotions and events that occurred in the past have a large connection with the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys’ of the present time.

In other words, the present is a consequence of the past; and the information within is totally unbiased, matter-of-fact, and non-judgmental. What we have done in the past, has been recorded and has become a compass that determines the probabilities of whatever we attract into our present time. This goes beyond individuality, as it affects us all as the human race.

From the Akashic Records emerge myths, beliefs, symbols and the well known archetypes of Carl Jung. Jungian Archetypes –as they are called- are “ancient or archaic images that derive from the collective unconscious”; the innate universal psychic predispositions common to all human kind.

This is not to be confused with intuition or instinct. Jung believed that instinct is “an unconscious physical impulse toward actions while the archetype is the psychic counterpart”. Once we are in-the-know, it becomes quite obvious that without these Records, human evolution –and survival- would not have happened and could not had been  possible… to this day.

It is also said that the Akashic Records are part of the Universal Mind. So when you learn to access them, it is like getting loving guidance from the One for the future. Moreover, when these records are combined with the four elements (earth, air, fire and water), they symbolize the five human senses: smell, sight, hearing, touch and taste.

Many psychics have talked about the Akashic Records. One of them was Helena Blavatsky, a Russian psychic (1831 to 1891), who described the Records as “the very core or essence of all types of energy, whether it be physical energy, psychic energy or even spiritual energy“. According to her, the very seeds of creation are within the Akashic Records, which are activated by the will of the Divine Spirit.

So… how can you benefit from this knowledge?

The Akashic Records are about absolute TRUTH, and as such they are meant to be explored. They can provide you with insight on your past, present, and future. Once you have access to every thought, feeling, and experience of human kind throughout limitless time, you can work on recreating your own life experiences.

For instance, if you feel you could have a block that is preventing you from achieving success, you could look into the cause of this block it in your past.

From this ‘knowing‘ you can get a better understanding of the block and know what to do to set yourself free from fear of failure or fear of success.

Here’s another example… If you find yourself picking the wrong person for a romantic relationship time and again, you can learn the reason behind that behavior and from that point, you can let go of the past experience that has you stuck in order to start facilitating meetings of possible right partners for you.

In this manner, the Akashic Records can become your book of answers. Once you learn to ask ‘why‘ you’ll find the answers by reading the Records.

The Akashic Records are THE origin of and for everything. They are a trusted source for truth. Just as Edgar Cayce used to read them, we can learn to access these records through states of altered consciousness, such as hypnosis. You don’t have to be a psychic or have special abilities to access, read and learn from the Akashic Records!

The possibilities are limitless… think about it! Imagine being able to peek into time -past and future- and see everything that has ever happened in the Universe. Picture being able to get reasons and explanations to mysteries of human history, or to get the understanding behind a profound event that altered history and even your own life… Imagine that!!

Time travel, artificial intelligence, teleportation and mind reading have fired the imagination of numerous science fiction authors since the early part of the 19th century, when –according to many- the very first science fiction novel was written. Can you guess it? None less than Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley!

By the mid-nineteenth century, para-psychological research intended to explain paranormal phenomena like telepathy, telekinesis and other ESP, but because these activities could not be replicated or understood in terms of known scientific principles, they were regarded as weird, abnormal and even uncanny, and eventually got discarded by the general public as non-sense pseudoscience.

However, with science making significant advances in recent years – especially in the field of quantum mechanics and quantum physics, mounting evidence appears to support the existence of a world that is imperceptible by the five senses, where the seemingly impossible can be possible, and where the unlimited power of the human mind is becoming more evident than ever.

Thus, even though parapsychologists have long accepted the fact that thoughts and ideas cannot be passed from one mind to another directly, they believe that telepathy –as well as other paranormal activities, are not only real but at work in most of us at any given time (if you have ever thought of a friend or relative that you have not heard of in a long time and then received a phone call from them ‘out of the blue’, you have experienced this first hand.) More importantly, parapsychologists believe that it is just a matter of time for human beings to get control of brain’s abilities.

To support this, neuroscientists are becoming more agreeable to the fact that there is more science than fiction in these precepts as they keep on researching and discovering that there is more than meets the eye. Will this be the marriage between science and fiction? Only time will tell, but for now, let’s explore something very exciting and available to all of us, right now…

Remove Viewing and Remote Influencing

When I first heard about RV and RI, I thought it was a term coined after an Isaac Asimov’s novel, but once I looked into it, I found a handful of fascinating facts.

Remote viewing refers to the ability to see without using our eyes with the purpose of acquiring information from an object or scene at a distance. This is done using the power of the mind, bypassing the sense of sight and allowing the mind to perceive and ‘see‘ regardless of space and time.

This process was first tested and used by the U.S. Federal Government. The goal of the “Stargate Project” –as it was coined- was to determine the potential of this psychic phenomenon for use in military applications. Unfortunately, the project was discarded in 1995, stating “lack of documented evidence.

As I kept reading, I came across Gerald O’Donnell, President and Founder of ARVARI, the Academy of Remote Viewing and Remote Influencing. Mr. O’Donnell, is an Hypnotherapist, who also holds MBA, Mathematics B.Sc. and Computer Science M.Sc. degrees.

His expertise in remote viewing earned him recognition as one of the world’s top technical commodities expert by Paine Webber and Bache Co. and back in the 80’s he was approached by a European Intelligence Agency to set up an experimental program on mental espionage.

It was during his work that he discovered that by using specific mental techniques, he was able to conquer time and space as stipulated in the non-locality theorem of quantum physics, which allowed him “to experience the perceived past and the probable future.

With this realization, Mr. O’Donnell decided to retire from the Intelligence Community and made it his mission to teach these principles to individuals for their personal growth, as well as on a global scale, with the intention to create healthier realities and a better world overall.

The techniques that he has developed and teaches to his students prove that limitations are a perception of the mind; thus, there are no limitations but only those we impose on ourselves. Gerald O’Donnell shows us that the path to live a happier existence is available to all of us. The only requirement is to learn to use our mind to our advantage and in the benefit of all. Fascinating, don’t you think?

The Art of Letting Go

Ho’oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian word meaning literally “to make right” or to correct errors. This word is used to describe a technique to solve problems in which family members gather to improve relationships through prayer, discussion, confession, repentance, mutual restitution and forgiveness. Much like a group mental cleansing, Ho’oponopono is a way to release past grudges, to let go and live at peace with yourself, those you love, and those around you.

The practice goes back to the mid 1900’s when Mary Kawena Pukui documented her experiences with this practice in her 2 volume book titled “Nānā i ke Kumu” which translates to Look to the Source.

In her volumes, Kawena describes Ho’oponopono as a practice where family members gather with the intention to bend broken family ties; much like the family meetings that therapists recommend nowadays, except Ho’oponopono includes prayer, confession and mutual compensation.

In 1980 Morrnah Nalamaku Simeona, a Kahuna (Healing Priest) herself, developed an updated version of the practice of Ho’oponopono to be implemented individually by all who need and desire to heal their hearts from resentment and discord. The main focus of this practice is to realize and accept complete responsibility for one’s deeds and actions.

Modern Ho’oponopono practice is based on the notion that everything we experience and exists around us is a projection of what we carry inside. Thus, it is our total responsibility to change our reality. In philosophical terms, this concept relates to solipsism – the only thing that exists is our mind.

The whole of reality is contingent upon the self’s perception, or the world within. The events in the world without (our outer world experience) are composed of mere interpretations of the self, having no objective existence. It is our own life experiences that got tattooed –so to speak- into our subconscious mind that compels us to “play them back” every time we encounter a new experience within the same realm.

Truth is, there are no new problems. As human beings, we carry the same blueprint since the beginning of time. We’re just playing and replaying the same old patterns. Carl Jung, Swiss Psychiatrist, referred to this as collective unconsciousness also known as a reservoir of the experiences of our species.

One of Jung’s famous theories associated with archetypes explains this concept more in depth. In it, Jung suggested the existence of universal stereotypes. These channel our experiences and emotions in a way that result in recognizable and specific behavior patterns which generate certain probable outcomes.

Memories are recorded in our subconscious mind and passed on from generation to generation. As we combine these inherited memories with our own life experiences we give birth to our own set of beliefs which make us behave the way we do. Many times, these memories fabricate limiting beliefs that manifest in vicious cycles we cannot seem to get rid of. For instance… how many times have you wanted to stop a certain behavior consciously only to realize later on that you have fallen into the same pattern, yet again?

Realize that every time you are unhappy or frustrated with one of your patterns, is because you are acting based on memories, either your own, your ancestors’ or a combination of both. As creatures of habit, this is why it seems so difficult for us -human beings- to break away from nagging routines or ways of being.

In most instances we are not even aware of this happening. This is also what makes us so unique. It may take years of self study into self discovery to get to know oneself.

The practice of Ho’oponopono enables us to release these old patterns and memories in order to emerge as the pure beings we truly are. It allows us to let go of erroneous thoughts that are preventing us from discovering our full potential and from being our true self.

Ho’oponopono Self I-Dentity practice

The updated Ho’oponopono practice, also called Self I-Dentity, is different from the group gatherings that characterized its roots. It is also different from modern day therapy and counseling. In this new version, it is the individual the one who starts this practice from a place of self conviction, free will and definite purpose.

Commitment and responsibility are present. The individual is aware of the fact that nothing needs to be fixed in the outer world, but that everything starts within the inner realm.

As mentioned above, the first step is to acknowledge that you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. As hard as this may be for some, this is an absolute essential to begin transformation, because by taking responsibility you are accepting that you are capable of modifying those aspects of your life that are not bringing you the results you want.

As simple as this may sound, it is the hardest part. Once you assimilate this and are willing to accept full responsibility, you are ready to move forward.

Four phrases to initiate the Ho’oponopono healing:
Thank you
I love you
I am sorry
Please forgive me

The simplified “how-to”

When you are ready, go to a cozy corner where you won’t be distracted and take a few minutes to be by yourself.

Sit or lay down comfortably, take a few deep breaths and close your eyes… try to set aside any problems you might have had during the day and just relax.

Now, repeat these four phrases over and over to yourself, either aloud or in your mind. Do it slowly and quietly, giving yourself the opportunity to feel the words. Focus on each word and pay attention to how you feel.

Here are some examples to follow…

  • What are you thankful for?
    Be thankful for the opportunity to clear this and let go.
  • Who do you love?
    Feel love towards the person who hurt you and towards yourself.
  • What are you sorry for?
    Feel sorry for whatever you did that caused this experience to manifest
    (this is where you take full responsibility)
  • What are you asking forgiveness for?
    Ask for forgiveness from your Higher Source and forgive yourself.
    Release and let go of what has caused this conflict and/or suffering.

Take a few moments to just be with these feelings. Let go of interpreting, ego and blame. When you are ready to continue, say a prayer for that somebody that is suffering or that has caused you suffering. It doesn’t need to be a prayer from a book, but from your heart. Breathe deeply, open your eyes, smile and go about your day feeling at peace with your being.

Learn the Art of Persuasion

Covert Hypnosis, is one of the most successful models of persuasion. For this to happen, the person using Covert Hypnosis must bypass the conscious mind of the person listening, and talk directly to their subconscious mind during a casual conversation.

Dr. Milton H. Erickson

Also known as Conversational, Underground or Street Hypnosis, this model of hypnosis was developed by Dr. Milton Hyland Erickson and it is considered one of the most effective techniques used today within the whole range of Ericksonian Hypnosis techniques.

In Covert Hypnosis, Dr. Erickson combined traditional hypnosis with NLP and other behavioral methodologies to order and command the subconscious mind through story telling or metaphors in a very persuasive manner. When metaphors and symbols are used, the mind gets conditioned to adapt to predetermined changes at a gradual pace.

An interesting fact is that Erickson developed this method initially as a self-help technique. Later in his life, he used his personal experience and his professional experience combined -while working with schizophrenic patients- to create the more comprehensive and revolutionary technique we know today for its unconventional effectiveness. The  technique is called Covert Hypnosis.

Due to his technique, Dr. Milton H. Erickson is regarded as a prominent figure in psychotherapy, right along with Dr. Carl Jung and Dr. Sigmund Freud.

Born in 1901 in a small town of Nevada, USA, Erickson faced several challenges while growing up. From being color blinded to mild dyslexia, his biggest challenge was having been stricken with polio at the age of 17, which confined him to his bed and a wheel chair most of the time. His eagerness to get out and see the world got him into using his mind to visualize himself doing the things he wanted to do. He spent so much time day dreaming that eventually he ended up inducing self-trance at will. While in that state, Erickson taught himself to walk again and eventually succeeded.

How does Covert Hypnosis work?

The main characteristic of Covert Hypnosis is that a specific conversation is loaded with embedded suggestions that provide precise instructions with a definite intention and that are unrecognizable by the conscious mind of the targeted individual.

An embedded suggestion is a repetitive suggestion that is hidden in the context of a conversation of an assortment of words. The statements that contain the embedded suggestion vary in wording and meaning; however, the suggestion itself is focused on a particular aspect you want for the individual to do.

One interesting aspect of this hypnotic technique is that results are almost instant, are readily realizable and better suited for applications outside the therapist’s office. In other words, this technique can be learned and used by everyday people just like you and me.

The Four Stages of Covert Hypnosis

If you want to become a great conversational hypnotist, you must learn and follow the following four stages. With practice, you will gain the ability to send your subject into an hypnotic trance without them being aware of it!

  • Attention
    Practice gaining your subject’s attention while talking to him/her about something of interest to them. A way to do this is to ask questions that peak curiosity about a subject of high interest to the person. The important step is to gain their attention so they are focused on your talk 100%.
  • Bypassing the Critical Factor
    The critical factor is the filter of the conscious mind that is in charge of analyzing every bit of information that comes from the world around us. This step is essential for Covert Hypnosis to work effectively. The subject must agree with you and accept your suggestions without questioning what you are saying. This means you should bypass their filter to talk to their subconscious mind.
  • Activation of the Unconscious Response
    In this stage the subject reacts to your conversation from an unconscious level. When the response evokes emotion is much more powerful. Examples of this are changes in position, watery eyes, forceful swallowing, rapid blinking and changes in breathing pattern.
  • Lead to a Desired Action or Response
    Once you recognize the unconscious response it will be very easy to lead them to your intended outcome. That outcome can be the modification of a thought process, a desired course of action, an idea or anything that you know will help the subject in any particular area of his life.

Many studies have been performed since Dr. Erickson developed this technique and it’s been proven time and again that the Covert Hypnosis method stands the test of time. Embedding suggestions works effectively regardless of age, culture and gender; and it works for a variety of purposes and goals.

A Powerful Self Help Technique

One of the memories I hold dear to my heart, is my father’s persistence in my learning and practicing autosuggestion as a self-help technique. At first, I thought this was a silly little thing and didn’t give it too much thought. However, every time he saw me getting stressed about upcoming school tests, he’d remind me of the power of autosuggestion, recommend an approach and encourage me to give it a try.

So one day I did… and –of course- nothing happened. Nonetheless, I decided to keep on trying as he’d warned me that it would take practice and consistency for it to work.

After all, I had nothing to lose, and if he was right, it would help me get rid of this annoying thing that I experienced every time I had a test at school.

You see, every time I was about to start writing answers to the questions posed on my test, my palms would start sweating profusely to the point that the pencil would become slippery and I could not write fast enough, let along legibly!

This was not only tremendously annoying, but it slowed me down and stressed me more. So I kept on practicing autosuggestion as instructed by my father, until the day I was able to notice the change that made me a believer.

As I felt less anxious and more confident, my palms stopped sweating. Not only that but the more I practiced, the better the results I got. Needless to say, I consider autosuggestion an invaluable technique that I practice to this day for a variety of things, from getting up early in the morning without an alarm clock (give it a try, it is fun and it’ll make you a believer!), to more elaborated goals.

But what exactly is autosuggestion and how it can help you?

Long before affirmations and the law of attraction became common talk, autosuggestion was used for many purposes, either consciously or unconsciously.

As you certainly know, the subconscious mind receives all kinds of information from the conscious mind. These bits of information come through our five senses and are related to how we see and perceive the world around us. When these experiences are repeated continuously, they sink into the subconscious mind and become an intrinsic part of who we are, what we believe and how we behave.

Unfortunately, some of these experiences may not be working on our behalf. And fortunately, there is something that can be done about that. With this I mean that we can condition our subconscious mind to hold certain beliefs to enhance our experiences; and through repetition, they become the reality we experience on a regular basis.

The autosuggestion technique helps you precisely with this. It is a technique that when learned and applied correctly, has the power to influence the subconscious mind according to your instructions. In other words, autosuggestion helps your subconscious mind believe a specific affirmation with an intended goal.

An interesting fact is that autosuggestion goes one step beyond positive affirmations. This is because affirmations are broader in structure while the autosuggestion technique bypasses your thinking mind and the awareness of your material body to go and affirm your unique human spirit identified with the words: I AM. This fact alone makes it a more powerful statement directed precisely to your subconscious mind.

Here is an example for you to compare. The first statement is a positive affirmation; the second line has two autosuggestion statements. More on that in a moment.

I enjoy happiness and wealth

I AM happy” and “I AM wealthy

I invite you to read both lines out loud. Did you feel the difference while stating out loud “I AM”?

I am not saying that affirmations don’t work. What I’m implying is that autosuggestion statements can be a more powerful technique for some of us. As individuals, we know well that what works for one may not work for another. Give both a try and see what works for you. That is the ultimate goal, after all.

The following three steps will help you practice autosuggestion effectively in your life:

  • “I AM” statements.

Always use “I AM” to state your suggestion in the present moment and in the first person. As you have already experienced, there is something intrinsic and very powerful in those two words. These words center you right at the precise moment you state them.

As mentioned above, one simple example of this is “I AM happy”. When this self affirmation is stated on a regular basis, it becomes an autosuggestion which eventually sinks into the subconscious mind where it will be taken at face value. Moreover, this practice will help you focus on happy moments on a more regular basis versus the anxious driven, overwhelmed or sad moments you may be experiencing in your life.

An interesting thing to notice is that those sad, anxious moments won’t just disappear in a blink; however, your subconscious mind will become trained to focus on “happy” moments instead; thus, bringing more of those experiences to your life. If you have ever met a person with huge problems and wondered how they manage to smile and live life on a positive slant, now you know how.

  • Align your auto-suggestion with relevant emotions.

When you add feeling to the statement as if it’s happening right now, your subconscious mind takes it as an actual reality in the moment of now.

It’s important to mention that the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between reality or fantasy, nor among true or false, or yes or no. This applies to feelings as well. Thus, when you make an “I AM” statement with feeling, your subconscious will take it at face value, just as if it’s happening right now, giving more power to the autosuggestion.

  • Repetition is powerful.

Write your statement exactly as you want to impress it upon your subconscious mind. Then read it aloud several times until you memorize it. Make it a point to repeat it as often as you remember throughout your day and preferably state it out loud. This engages more of your senses, reinforcing the statement you are thinking about.

Commit to do this often, several times per day, until it becomes second nature to you and you see your statement come to pass. It is NOT recommended to use two or more autosuggestion statements in one sentence as it delays the actual experience of both. For instance, when I wanted to get rid of my sweaty palms while taking school tests, I just focused on “I AM confident.” This statement allowed me to get rid of my test-taking anxiety, and answer the questions in a relaxed manner, which resulted in dry palms.

Once your goal is attained, you can move into using a new autosuggestion for another area of your life.

Statistics show that the average adult processes over 60,000 thoughts every 24 hours and of those, 90% happen at a subconscious level.

When you consider this, you can clearly see why most of us live on automatic. Now, while some of these things are perfectly OK to do without conscious involvement –such as brushing our teeth or tying our shoes- I’m sure you’ll agree with me that more important things require not only involvement on our part but conscious intervention.

This is where autosuggestion can play a major role in changing your life for the better.

I encourage you to add this method to your self development techniques arsenal. Learn it and practice it on any area of your life, from day to day living to more elaborated and bigger life goals. As you practice and get better at it, you’ll become more and more amazed at the results you can create!

Breathing is an innate physiological function common to all of us living beings. Not only do we take it for granted but believe it is not something that needs to be learned. After all, breathing is the very first thing we do when we come into this world and the very last right before we leave.

Taking this into consideration, it’s safe to affirm that babies are the most skilled human beings when it comes to breathing properly. Since they do not have present problems or worries about their future, they are mainly happy to exist and they show exactly that with every breath they take.

Why is it then that we unlearn how to breathe properly as we grow older?

As strange as it sounds, most of us do not know how to breathe properly. Shallow breathing –reaching only the upper chest- tends to be the norm for the majority of people, especially if we live a rushed and stressful lifestyle.

As we experience a variety of emotions every single day, each of these feelings generate a reaction that in many cases goes unperceived. From fear of disapproval and rejection to guilt, anger, sadness, worry and concern, these and other stressors create emotions that affect our physiology and the way we breathe, on a moment by moment basis. Just observe an angry person’s breathing pattern and you will witness this first hand!

To make matters worse, some people experience breathing problems due to already existing health conditions such as sleep apnea, allergies, excess weight, COPD, and asthma among others. When you add to these conditions the effects that emotions have on breathing patterns, it’s easy to see how many individuals are breathing-deficient.

Let’s review a handful of effects that shallow breathing has over our physical health.

Physiologically speaking, improper breathing causes hypo-ventilation which prevents proper oxygenation of the blood. As muscle cells are deprived from oxygen, fatigue, stiffness, pains and aches, sleepiness, and exhaustion become common.

Moreover, when brain cells suffer from lack of oxygen, the results are nervousness, irritability, headaches, foggy thinking, and difficulty with concentration and problem-solving.

If this is not addressed, this condition can spring into on-going lack of motivation and lack of vitality, and eventually it can turn into depression. As if that was not enough, there are some aspects of improper breathing that are not commonly known or discussed, even though these can profoundly impact the overall health of a person in a more profound way. We’re talking here about the spiritual, psychic, and mental aspects of breathing.

From the spiritual viewpoint, breathing is a process of exchange in which we ‘take in’ from the universe, and we give back to it with every single breath. It is a rhythmic exchange of ‘Chi‘ or energy, a basic and natural part of the life and world we all share.

And it goes even further. When a person breathes properly, he/she is able to take in and capture the energy from the surrounding environment and can send focused prana to a specific organ in his/her body with the purpose of making it stronger and more invigorating. If you have ever practiced Qi-Gong, you know what I’m referring to. This is an extremely powerful technique to help the healing process and/or to keep the body functioning at peak performance.

Feeling Overwhelmed?

Feeling overwhelmed during the Holiday Season or during a special occasion or event such as the planning of a wedding, presenting an exam, or going on a trip, is considered relatively normal as most of us are capable of handling these types of temporary situations successfully. However, living in a constant state of overwhelm has become the norm rather than the exception for many people.

Chronic overwhelm is one of the most debilitating emotions. It is a sensation that cannot easily be brushed under the rug while expecting it to disappear altogether just a few days after the main trigger has been dealt with. Moreover, if ignored indefinitely, the consequences become a burden on the overall well-being of the affected person.

Depending on how you handle stress as an individual, the effects of this condition may take time to become evident but ultimately, feeling overwhelmed regularly can affect your mind, body and spirit unless you learn to implement steps to recognize and alleviate it.

So, what do you do when you are feeling overwhelmed? Or better yet, are you even aware that you might be in a constant state of overwhelm? This is an important question to ask yourself as the feeling itself prevents the awareness… and you cannot work on making anything better unless you are first aware that the problem exists.

Let’s explore the mechanics of the condition.

The feeling of overwhelm derives from the stress caused by your reactions to life’s ups and downs. The anxiety caused by a rushed lifestyle, in a cluttered environment, an overbooked schedule, and not enough hours in the day to tackle all those things on your “to-do” list, eventually cause a sense of hopelessness.

Much like a snow ball going downhill, as you get more responsibilities and obligations, hopelessness increases and the feeling of overwhelm grows larger until it can wreck havoc on your nervous system and your health.

The problem is that it is not easy to become aware of your state precisely because you are so busy ‘at it’!

And, since the feeling feeds on stress, it becomes a vicious cycle. The more stress and worry the more tension and overwhelm, so much so that it becomes a part of life.

Here are a few pointers for you to ponder upon and help you identify if you are caught up in this cycle…

  • Do you frequently feel irritable or on the edge for no apparent reason?
  • Have you lost your sense of humor? Can you remember the last time you laughed out loud?
  • Do you feel a strange need of keeping busy even when the daily usual tasks have been completed?
  • Do you feel like you are spinning your wheels and getting nowhere?
  • Have you lost your enthusiasm for those activities that used to excite you?
  • Do you feel like life is getting ahead of you?
  • Do you feel like no matter how much you do,you’ll never get caught up?

From Overwhelm to Clarity

The feeling of overwhelm intensifies every time a new task gets added to your already overtaxed schedule. The resulting sensation is one of inadequacy, wanting to give up, anxiety, sadness, and even depression. As you are probably aware, your emotional health eventually affects your physical health unless you take measures to solve this situation.

Let’s now explore what happens inside when you are feeling overwhelmed:

Once a stressor is present, the adrenal glands –that sit atop the kidneys- go on override to produce cortisol, the stress hormone that helps us during the “fight or flight”response. This physiological response is natural and meant to last only a short time. Under normal circumstances, once the threat is gone, the cortisol levels dwindle down, until the need arises again. This is a wonderful mechanism of the body with the purpose of keeping us safe and well.

However, when we are chronically overwhelmed, the levels of cortisol remain high in our system which had the potential to damage healthy tissues. Eventually, adrenal fatigue causes constant sleepiness or insomnia, foggy thinking, fatigue that can go from temporary weakness to permanent exhaustion, weight gain, depression, irritability, and mood swings. As the adrenal glands become depleted, adrenal exhaustion sets in giving way to a variety of serious health conditions.

Also, from the metaphysical view point, feeling overwhelmed and stressed will inhibit your potential to manifest abundance because feeling overwhelmed is a low vibration state!

So what can you do to ease on anxiety and on feeling overwhelmed?

  • Nutrition– cut down on stimulants, decrease refined carbohydrates, increase green leafy vegetables in your diet, drink plenty of water, and take a nutritional supplement.
  • Rest– sleep at least 7 to 8 hours per day, and take breaks from activities throughout the day.
  • Lifestyle– reduce your stressors consciously, exercise more and take frequent walks, practice yoga, dedicate time to an activity that you enjoy, breathe properly and deeply on a regular basis, and meditate.
