Lucid Dreaming

Do you remember all the hype around Virtual Reality about 10 years ago?

If you believed what the experts were saying back then, we would be spending our time today exploring alternative worlds and having a lot of fun with adventures as special agents, powerful warriors or even superheroes … all as if we were really living the experience right there and then.

Sadly, technology has not gotten quite there yet … but some exciting prototypes are being tested as I write this (Dec, 2016.) However, there are people who enjoy adventures in virtual reality one, two or more times per week, and without fancy technology. These fortunate few have learned to harness the power of lucid dreaming.

Unlike usual dreams which can be hazy, strange and frequently forgotten as soon as you wake up, lucid dreams are very different and quite special because when you dream in this fashion you are actually awake inside your dream!

In other words, imagine this: You are warm in your bed and start dreaming. Only you know you’re dreaming, yet the things you are dreaming about are ‘out of the ordinary.’ Nevertheless, the world around you seems as ‘real‘ as the one you’re in now, as you are reading this article. Exciting, uh?! But you might be asking…

Why Would I Want to Learn Lucid Dreaming?

A sleeping person who is dreaming lucidly knows that he(she) is awake inside the dream and can even remember the dream, totally or partially after he awakens. The amazing thing is that those who have developed this amazing ability are able to control or redirect the outcomes of their dreams. This could be compared to plotting a sci-fi movie in which you get to decide what you do (how about flying like Superman?) and how the story ends.

Now, think about it… This is HUGE because you can manipulate your dream to your liking and experience the dream ‘as if’ it was a reality which helps you modify limiting beliefs, handle fears, achieve seemingly impossible things, and reprogram your subconscious mind to succeed at anything you want!

Imagine the possibilities!

Let’s say that you had fear of heights and that you have trained yourself to lucid dream. You go to sleep and through a series of prompts, you begin to dream lucidly.

This means that you are awake within your dream. Then, you purposefully picture yourself climbing a ladder in total confidence. You can add as many details as you want and see yourself totally confident, fearless, courageous, and enjoying the experience. Since your subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between yes and no and can’t discern reality from fantasy, you will be living and feeling the experience as if you were actually there.

Think about it… you can use lucid dreaming as a self-development technique to achieve goals, enhance your self-growth and become the person you want to be, easier, faster, and  having fun… almost effortlessly!

Types of Lucid Dreaming

There are two ways with which lucid dreaming begins. The first one is called the dream-initiated lucid dream. It refers to a person who is asleep, starts dreaming and then begins to be conscious of the fact that he is dreaming while being able to remain asleep. The second one is called the wake-initiated lucid dream. In this one the person is still fully awake yet falls into a state of dream and can ‘live‘ the experiences as if they were real as well.

How To Lucid Dream

The good news is that everyone can develop the ability to dream in this fashion. There are simple methods and techniques to develop the ability to lucid dreaming which have been proven to be effective and safe for many people. To start, all you need to do is believe that you will be able to achieve the goal of gaining this ability, and you will.

Here are some points to learn and follow:

  • Practice Reality Checks

If you are in a state of disbelief about something that you consider out of the ordinary or abnormal, check it out against something that is real. That’s how you’ll know you are dreaming. For instance, grab a pencil with your right hand right now and try to pierce the palm of your left hand with it. You will feel pressure and if you do it long enough, you will feel pain. This will indicate that you are awake. If you were dreaming, you’d be able to pierce the palm of your left hand and see the pencil going straight through, with no resistance, blood or pain.

The practice of reality checks while awake will eventually leak into your dreams and will become the signal that let’s you know you are actually asleep. When this becomes habitual, you will start to dream about this and soon conclude that indeed you are dreaming. Make it a habit to practice reality checks like these while you go about your day.

  • Write Your Dreams in a Journal

As soon as you are awake, recall your dream and write it down with precision; such as place, people, events, facts, and what exactly happened; write down as much details as you remember. Don’t wait long as significant points become blurry soon after awakening.

When you keep a dream journal, you will soon discover that there are common dream patterns or details that are present in your dreams.

This will help you first identify if the dream is lucid, and then it will help you fall into this kind of dream on purpose and more often.

  • Concentrate on Dreaming Lucidly

Before falling asleep, focus your attention and concentration on having a lucid dream. Soak your mind deeply in the subject by reading, learning, and thinking about it as much as possible. Talk about this interest of yours with others and make it a subject of curiosity and exploration so it becomes a frequent instance in your mind.

  • Establish Your Own Sleeping Schedule

Lucid dreaming can be induced by establishing a sleeping time and pattern, because as with any habit, the more you do it the more predictable it becomes. So plan to determine the best time for you to go to sleep and stick to it to train your mind to fall asleep at a certain time and follow patterns with ease in this manner.

  • Create a Personal Reminder

A personal reminder can be a small object to help you confirm that you are awake after having had a lucid dream. It will be your clue to determine whether you are indeed awake or not. When you see and feel this object in your hand, it creates a signal that prompts you to realize that you are indeed awake.

Here’s an example of this

If you watched the mind-bending movie “Inception” by acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan and leading actor Leonardo DiCaprio playing the character of Cobb, you’ll recall that at the end of the movie the viewer is left to make his/her own conclusions based on perception and interpretation of what happens to the spinning top.

Was Cobb still dreaming when he went back to his children or was the spinning top about to fall over and confirm the scene was an awaken reality? The top was the signal (personal reminder) that Cobb used throughout the movie to determine whether he was awake or dreaming because no top will spin indefinitely, unless it is in a dream.

  • Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreaming (MILD) Technique

This technique was introduced by Stephen Laberge, a psycho-physiologist and leader in the scientific study of lucid dreaming, and founder of “The Lucidity Institute.” The technique allows you to recall your dream in as much detail as possible and becoming conscious that you are dreaming by repetitively telling yourself that you are dreaming.

Of course, these are  a few basic principles of this practice. To become very good at lucid dreaming, more learning, understanding and practice are needed. Experts can do this effectively and at will, and the benefits are only limited to one’s imagination. Just think about this… anything is possible when you are dreaming, and the subconscious mind does not differentiate between fact or fiction… what would your plan be if you were to dream lucidly tonight?

Autosuggestion

Autosuggestion

A Powerful Self Help Technique

One of the memories I hold dear to my heart, is my father’s persistence in my learning and practicing autosuggestion as a self-help technique. At first, I thought this was a silly little thing and didn’t give it too much thought. However, every time he saw me getting stressed about upcoming school tests, he’d remind me of the power of autosuggestion, recommend an approach and encourage me to give it a try.

So one day I did… and –of course- nothing happened. Nonetheless, I decided to keep on trying as he’d warned me that it would take practice and consistency for it to work.

After all, I had nothing to lose, and if he was right, it would help me get rid of this annoying thing that I experienced every time I had a test at school.

You see, every time I was about to start writing answers to the questions posed on my test, my palms would start sweating profusely to the point that the pencil would become slippery and I could not write fast enough, let along legibly!

This was not only tremendously annoying, but it slowed me down and stressed me more. So I kept on practicing autosuggestion as instructed by my father, until the day I was able to notice the change that made me a believer.

As I felt less anxious and more confident, my palms stopped sweating. Not only that but the more I practiced, the better the results I got. Needless to say, I consider autosuggestion an invaluable technique that I practice to this day for a variety of things, from getting up early in the morning without an alarm clock (give it a try, it is fun and it’ll make you a believer!), to more elaborated goals.

But what exactly is autosuggestion and how it can help you?

Long before affirmations and the law of attraction became common talk, autosuggestion was used for many purposes, either consciously or unconsciously.

As you certainly know, the subconscious mind receives all kinds of information from the conscious mind. These bits of information come through our five senses and are related to how we see and perceive the world around us. When these experiences are repeated continuously, they sink into the subconscious mind and become an intrinsic part of who we are, what we believe and how we behave.

Unfortunately, some of these experiences may not be working on our behalf. And fortunately, there is something that can be done about that. With this I mean that we can condition our subconscious mind to hold certain beliefs to enhance our experiences; and through repetition, they become the reality we experience on a regular basis.

The autosuggestion technique helps you precisely with this. It is a technique that when learned and applied correctly, has the power to influence the subconscious mind according to your instructions. In other words, autosuggestion helps your subconscious mind believe a specific affirmation with an intended goal.

An interesting fact is that autosuggestion goes one step beyond positive affirmations. This is because affirmations are broader in structure while the autosuggestion technique bypasses your thinking mind and the awareness of your material body to go and affirm your unique human spirit identified with the words: I AM. This fact alone makes it a more powerful statement directed precisely to your subconscious mind.

Here is an example for you to compare. The first statement is a positive affirmation; the second line has two autosuggestion statements. More on that in a moment.

I enjoy happiness and wealth

I AM happy” and “I AM wealthy

I invite you to read both lines out loud. Did you feel the difference while stating out loud “I AM”?

I am not saying that affirmations don’t work. What I’m implying is that autosuggestion statements can be a more powerful technique for some of us. As individuals, we know well that what works for one may not work for another. Give both a try and see what works for you. That is the ultimate goal, after all.

The following three steps will help you practice autosuggestion effectively in your life:

  • “I AM” statements.

Always use “I AM” to state your suggestion in the present moment and in the first person. As you have already experienced, there is something intrinsic and very powerful in those two words. These words center you right at the precise moment you state them.

As mentioned above, one simple example of this is “I AM happy”. When this self affirmation is stated on a regular basis, it becomes an autosuggestion which eventually sinks into the subconscious mind where it will be taken at face value. Moreover, this practice will help you focus on happy moments on a more regular basis versus the anxious driven, overwhelmed or sad moments you may be experiencing in your life.

An interesting thing to notice is that those sad, anxious moments won’t just disappear in a blink; however, your subconscious mind will become trained to focus on “happy” moments instead; thus, bringing more of those experiences to your life. If you have ever met a person with huge problems and wondered how they manage to smile and live life on a positive slant, now you know how.

  • Align your auto-suggestion with relevant emotions.

When you add feeling to the statement as if it’s happening right now, your subconscious mind takes it as an actual reality in the moment of now.

It’s important to mention that the subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between reality or fantasy, nor among true or false, or yes or no. This applies to feelings as well. Thus, when you make an “I AM” statement with feeling, your subconscious will take it at face value, just as if it’s happening right now, giving more power to the autosuggestion.

  • Repetition is powerful.

Write your statement exactly as you want to impress it upon your subconscious mind. Then read it aloud several times until you memorize it. Make it a point to repeat it as often as you remember throughout your day and preferably state it out loud. This engages more of your senses, reinforcing the statement you are thinking about.

Commit to do this often, several times per day, until it becomes second nature to you and you see your statement come to pass. It is NOT recommended to use two or more autosuggestion statements in one sentence as it delays the actual experience of both. For instance, when I wanted to get rid of my sweaty palms while taking school tests, I just focused on “I AM confident.” This statement allowed me to get rid of my test-taking anxiety, and answer the questions in a relaxed manner, which resulted in dry palms.

Once your goal is attained, you can move into using a new autosuggestion for another area of your life.

Want to master autosuggestion easier and faster? (I wish this had been available to me back then!)

Statistics show that the average adult processes over 60,000 thoughts every 24 hours and of those, 90% happen at a subconscious level.

When you consider this, you can clearly see why most of us live on automatic. Now, while some of these things are perfectly OK to do without conscious involvement –such as brushing our teeth or tying our shoes- I’m sure you’ll agree with me that more important things require not only involvement on our part but conscious intervention.

This is where autosuggestion can play a major role in changing your life for the better.

I encourage you to add this method to your self development techniques arsenal. Learn it and practice it on any area of your life, from day to day living to more elaborated and bigger life goals. As you practice and get better at it, you’ll become more and more amazed at the results you can create!

“Live as if it were already manifest and you shall find it manifest.”

Recharge Your Energy

Recharge Your Energy

Personal development is a life-long endeavor, one that takes a conscious decision, courage, determination, dedication, effort, patience, and study time, among other things. Besides working on your mindset and your attitude, you must also have an inquisitive and open mind not only to research and learn what excites you, but to be able to recognize the subtle variations in the vibrations within you and around you; so when you need a boost, you can recharge your energy and remain positive overall.

However, despite your determination and apart from recognizing your countless blessings and the many things you have to be grateful for, there are days in which stress may get the best out of you and leave you with a feeling of doom and gloom… Does it sound familiar? Yes, we’ve all “been there”… at one point or another we all have felt drained as we absorb other people’s emotional states and negative vibes from the environment and from what happens around us.

This comes about as a result of pressures at work, when you get sick, feel tired or have not slept well, when you have a misunderstanding with a loved one and get hurt, when a communication barrier arises, and even when we watch the news. As a result, you end up feeling worn out. It can be tough to regain your strength and feel positive again. This is when you need to take some time for yourself to recharge your energy and renew your spirits.

Here are a handful of ideas to help you recharge your energy and recover from less than perfect situations in life.

  • Take a Break from It “All” in a Snap!

Leave the cause of your stress for a few minutes, both physically and mentally. This tip is applicable particularly when you are feeling overwhelmed because of many things going on around you at the same time.

Find a place to sit quietly by yourself and close your eyes for a few moments. Take a few deep breaths and relax. In your mind, recite your favorite affirmation a few times to yourself, slowly. After a few minutes, take a deep breath again and gently open your eyes. This short break can give you a new perspective on the issue – or issues – at hand.

  • Meditate

This is similar to the previous one but a bit more formal, so to say. Take 20 to 30 minutes to just “be” with yourself. Close your eyes and breathe deeply and slowly a few times until you feel peace inside by disconnecting your mind from the outside world. Focus on the air going in and out of your longs. This feeling will initiate a meditative state.

Try not to think of anything if at all possible. If that is difficult, focus your mind on an imaginary object or a vision that can relax you. Here are a few ideas. You can make variations as you see fit:

    • A great shower of light is bathing you and enfolding you in warmth. This light not only wraps you but fills your being with peace all the way to the core.
    • You are a feather floating in the air. You become lighter and lighter as you glide downward. You finally touch the ground, softly and gently. You landed on a beautiful prairie. As you lie there, you realize all negative feelings and heaviness have left your body. You are basically weightless.
    • As you breathe in, you inhale peace, as you breathe out you release all ill feelings and stress. As you breathe slowly and deeply, imagine all the negative thoughts and feelings you are releasing. You may want to add color to your visualization; i.e. breathing in reflects peace, the air going in is light blue; breathing out reflects stress, the air is bright red or dark.

A relaxing piece of music can help in your meditation. Also, listening to the music alone and letting it wash away your worries and concerns can also work, even without using your imagination. Music is known as a way to recharge your energy because of its inherent vibrations (more on this in a minute)… Try several variations and see what works best for you.

  • Replenish Your Energy from Mother Nature

You don’t need to go too far to do this. If you don’t live by the ocean or the mountains, you can draw energy from focusing on the beauty of a simple flower, a bird, or a tree. Take note of the object’s every detail. What color is it? Shape? How does it move with the wind? What is the texture? Is it smooth? Drink or absorb its essence and imagine this essence filling you with positive renewed energy.

  • Ask for Energy

As they say… “Ask and you shall receive”… The people who love and support you can be a very powerful source of new energy.

Their help can be especially valuable to recharge your energy when you are having a hard time replenishing it on your own, and especially if they are positive by nature.

When you are feeling tired, overwhelmed or depressed, you can ask people close to you to send you energy. You can make your request by letting them know how you are feeling and that you need positive energy.

They can share theirs with a fuzzy hug, a warm smile, a pat on the back, making you laugh, or simply by keeping you company, all of which are empathetic actions.

  • Give Your Energy to Others

You may think that when you are down, sad or stressed, you are depleted of all of your energy and that you no longer have any to spare; much less to give away.

However, sometimes the act of giving that little energy you have will initiate the giving and receiving cycle and you will very likely end up receiving more. For example, if a friend has a problem and asks for your opinion and support, you could end up forgetting about your own worries for a moment and focus your attention on him/her. When you do this, there is an exchange of energy where you offer support. The mere act of giving energy in this manner will actually help you recharge your energy by drawing it back to you.

Dr. Michael Smith, Polarity Therapist, is the creator of The Complete Empath Toolkita fabulous system to recharge your energy every time you need it .

I invite you to take look at the complimentary first few chapters before you decide if this is for you. Dr. Smith shares the first 26 pages of this #1 BookBuzzr book in which he tells you why and how he started on this transformational path that has helped over 500,000 people worldwide!

Then, watch the following video in which Dr. Michael Smith, suggest a few things to help you live a life as an energetically clear person. Watch it here…

By the way, as you saw in the video, Dr. Smith uses tuning forks amongst other tools. Tuning forks are excellent tools commonly used to aid in the vibrational healing of many conditions. You can learn more about this here.

Whatever you decide to do, always remember that energy cannot be destroyed, just transformed. Thus, you have an innate ability to transform your energy from negative to positive anytime you want; you can replenish your own energy by nurturing yourself with the unlimited affirmative energy that abounds in your surroundings.

You’ve just got to learn how to do this, and like anything worthwhile, practice until you become an expert at it. The rewards can be fantastic!

in something bigger than yourself,
the more energy you will have.”

Raise Your Vibrations

How To Raise Your Vibrations

to Manifest Your Desires

If you have been studying the law of attraction for awhile, you know that there is one concept that comes up often at the top of the list… You MUST raise your vibrations in order to manifest your desires.

Yes, I’m sure you have read or heard this numerous times BUT… What exactly does it mean to raise your vibrations? How do you go about raising your vibrations? And once you are doing it… how do you know if you are indeed raising your vibrations to attract what you want? For many, these questions remain unanswered and as such, it leaves them wondering how to move forward with this “vibration and manifesting” concept… So let’s explore this in more detail.

Question #1… What does it mean to raise your vibration?

To better understand this, let’s take a couple of minutes for a physics mini-lesson. Vibration is defined as the rhythmical and rapid motion of particles. When two bodies vibrate at the same frequency, they are said to be in resonance. This means they are attuned with each other.

Now, according to Quantum Physics, every single thing in the universe is energy. From this premise, it is safe to conclude that solid objects are a form of energy expressed as physical matter. And, since matter is composed of particles, energy is also particles. Correct?

In short, matter and energy are interchangeable, meaning one can “be converted into” the other. Thus, the only difference between the physical and non-physical is the state of the energy which is determined by the amplitude and frequency of the motion of its particles. This is what is called “vibration rate” and what allows for the invisible to become visible when your inner vibration is attuned with the vibration of the intended object or result.

Are you with me so far? OK, great. End of physics mini-lesson  🙂

Now, as human beings we perceive the world around us from the vibrations we receive and process through our five senses. Our brain interprets these signals and gives them meaning. This happens all the time either consciously or unconsciously.

When you hear a bird chirping, for instance, your brain receives the signals through your auditory sense and interprets the vibrations caused by the sound waves emitted by the bird. When you see a rainbow, your eyes are conveying to your brain the reflection of the light waves which are created by vibrations.

The same goes for touch. When you hold a glass of ice water you feel it cold because its molecules are vibrating at a lower frequency than those of your body temperature and as such, you feel the vibrations of cold.

Sweet or sour, bitter or salty, whatever you taste also manifests from the vibration of the molecules in the foods that you are putting in your mouth. Then, when you perceive the aroma of a rose is because its molecules vibrate in the air which you perceive through your sense of smell.

These interpretations of our brain create feelings and emotions which are also vibrations. For instance, imagine you are walking on a calm beach, watching a beautiful sunset, enjoying the warm temperature on your skin, listening to the waves breaking offshore and smelling the salt in the air… how do you feel?

According to memories and prior experiences you may or may not like the ocean; regardless of your feeling, it creates a vibration. If you enjoy this experience, you will raise your vibration. If this doesn’t bring good memories to you, your vibration decreases. The same is true for every thought and memory that comes to mind, so make it a habit to watch what you are thinking of on a regular basis. Remember that thoughts and memories do not necessarily match your present moment!

Are you getting a better picture on how you create and raise your vibration? Once you are aware of this, you understand that you can create them intentionally. Let’s move to Question #2 to learn how to raise your vibrations at will.

Question #2… How do you go about raising your vibrations?

When you are feeling down, have received bad news or just when things aren’t going your way, you are vibrating at a lower rate. Acknowledge that if you stay in that state, you will attract more of the same.

The good news is that you can do something about it. There are not one or two, but literally hundreds of ways in which you can raise your vibrations. I will list five of my favorite ones below and I invite you here to share what has helped raise your vibrations to manifest something, no matter how small it was! Sharing and learning from each other will only help us all manifest our desires faster!

  • Music

This is one practice that I keep close at heart. I have a collection of CDs with my favorite New Age and instrumental music that sends me to a higher vibration right away! And speaking of the sense of hearing, white noise also has the power to raise my vibrations. I enjoy listening to rain, waterfalls, and rivers, among other Mother Nature’s noises
  • Reading

Nothing better than reading an inspirational non-fiction story to raise my vibrations! I especially like biographies of people who have had challenges and overcame them regardless of circumstances.
  • Journal Writing or Scripting

When I take a few moments to write about the things I feel grateful about, I immediately feel a shift in my energy! However, writting habitually is even better. It helps you raise your vibrations as you do and then it is easier to maintain them in between your journaling sessions. Give it a try… it is also very conforting to the soul.
  • Walks by the lake or on the sand

In general, being outdoors and in contact with Mother Nature is a great tonic for my vibes. One of my favorites is walking on the beach, especially during sunset when the views are fantastic as I get to appreciate Mother Nature’s canvas in vivid color!
  • Meditation

Whenever I’ve had a stressful day (stress lowers your vibrations) I take a few minutes to put my mind at ease through meditation. I can feel uplifted right away just by focusing on my breathing and letting go of thoughts. Try it!
Your turn to share… what do you do when you feel down? How do you quiet your mind to alleviate your worry or release your stress? Can you think about something that you manifested, no matter how small it was? What happened right before then? How were you feeling right before you got what you wanted?

You probably didn’t know that by soothing yourself in a certain way you were instinctively raising your vibrations… and by doing so, you were facilitating the manifestation of your desire – but now you do!

Question #3… How do you know if you are raising your vibrations to match those of what you want to manifest?

This is the easiest step in the manifesting process for once you know how to raise your vibrations; the next step is visualizing what you want from that state of emotion. Here is an example:

Let’s say that you have been stressed out because your car has left you stranded often recently and your intention is to manifest a reliable car. Notice how you feel every time you think about your old car… stressed out equals low vibrations. Now, take a few moments to put your mind at ease. You may choose to take a walk and focus on the good things you have in your life. Become aware of how you are raising your vibrations just by doing this.

Next, visualize yourself driving the car you want. Add detail to your visualization until it appears so real as if you could almost touch it… then, allow yourself to feel the emotion. Stay in that state for as long as you want and then bring your visualization to an end by affirming… “This is so; it has already happened.” Now, take action – start looking for the car you want. Don’t worry about how it will happen, just move forward with confidence. Repeat as often as possible until your new car is parked on your driveway!

Tips To Be Happier

Tips To Be Happier

All of us have difficult days every now and then, days in which we wish we were feeling more positive to endure the complexities of life. We may try to convince ourselves that these things happen in life, that it’s no big deal, and that this soon ‘shall pass.’ While these thoughts are positive in nature and even a bit encouraging, they may not be enough to get us into a better state of mind. Truth is, it may not be as easy as it sounds.

Have you experienced something like this yourself? If you feel stuck in your own emotional loopholes when the going gets rough, and if you find that feeling happier is a struggle sometimes, these “Seven Tips To Be Happier” will help you lift your mood in no time at all, so you can feel happy NOW

  • Take a walk

Most of us know that taking a short daily walk is a wonderful form of physical exercise. And when we are feeling down it is also beneficial for our inner state. So, if you feel overwhelmed or if things are not going your way, take a walk in a natural location where you can admire plants, birds and yes, even butterflies.

Take deep breaths and feel your lungs expand with fresh air. Make it a point to focus in the beauty of nature and smile. Forget about your problem for a few minutes. You will not only feel more relaxed and happier, but will look at your situation from a different angle when you return to it.
  • Listen to beautiful music

Research has proven that music is a great tool to shift the listener’s state of being within moments. Its effects can be almost magical. When you feel blue, dig out that CD you haven’t listened to in years or tune in your favorite radio station to something you have not listened to in awhile, or even something totally new. If stress is getting the best out of you, classical music may be helpful as well. Vivaldi tones are known to improve mood and overall well-being.

You may want to jump to the bottom of this page, and push play before you keep on reading this article so you can experience Vivaldi’s Four Seasons for a few moments of bliss… 🙂

  • Be open to discover and explore something new

Go to a library and read something different than what you’d normally read. Go to a bookstore and browse through the magazine section. What catches your eye? Buy a magazine you wouldn’t normally buy. This will help you open your mind to learning a new thing or two, and/or feel the enthusiasm of discovering a wonderful activity or new hobby.
  • Laugh out loud!

Laughter is the best medicine. We’ve all heard this phrase and it is true! Laughter is one of the best ways to lift your spirits and it is free.Read a humorous book, or watch a comedy. Allow yourself to laugh big! Try to learn a few new jokes to share with others. And don’t take life too seriously. We’ve all been silly at times. We’ve all goofed off some other times. It’s totally OK to learn to laugh at ourselves too!
  • Learn to breathe and meditate

Breathing-meditation is a great exercise that you can do anywhere for just a few minutes and it has wonderful side effects. Simply look for a place where you won’t be disturbed, and sit comfortably with your back straight. Then, close your eyes and place your attention on the flow of air going in and out of your nostrils and follow it all the way to your lungs. Do this slowly.

Relax and smile as you do it. For better results, add an imaginary color to the air that goes in and out. Choose a bright color going in, and a darker color going out. Associate colors with your mood; i.e. pink for happy, brown for unhappy. Breathe happiness in and let go of unhappiness. That’s all there is to it. When you do this for 10 to 15 minutes, you will be pleasantly surprised at how you will feel afterward!
  • Drawing for fun

Do you remember when you used to scribble for hours as a child? We all loved drawing silly little pictures when we were younger. And doodling is not just for kids or artists, so go get a few pens, color pencils, crayons or whatever you have and just draw whatever comes to you for the fun of it. Notice how you get distracted as your state of mind shifts. On a stressful day, this can be therapeutic!
  • Acknowledge the less fortunate

The fact that you are reading this article and have access to the web suggests that most likely you are much better off than most people on this planet. It may be hard to believe, but those two things alone mean that you are better off than most people in the world.

Unfortunately, many human beings live in poverty and barely have access to the basics for survival. There are many people who live in pain, hunger and despair. When you give yourself a few moments to feel compassion for them, you’ll get a warm feeling of gratefulness and happiness for what you have in your life.

These seven simple tips are nothing profound, new or life changing, but when all you need is a quick pick me up these may be just what you need.

The Pursuit of Happiness

The Pursuit of

Happiness

Regardless of your profession or career path, your culture or language, your age or where you live in this vast planet, the pursuit of happiness is one common goal to all of us, human beings. Every time we have a dream, set a goal, pray, or wish for something, the underlying emotion we are seeking is happiness. When we have an experience that causes pleasure or has meaning to us, we bring about a positive feeling that translates into joy.

According to the dictionary, happiness is a state of mind or feeling characterized by contentment, satisfaction, pleasure, or joy. One definition I found at a Princeton University website says that happiness is a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy.

I believe happiness can be compared to an elusive butterfly going from one flower to another in the garden of life. Let’s use this analogy and imagine a young child walking in the park on a sunny day.

The child sees a colorful butterfly and with eyes of wonder follows its flying pattern. Curiosity makes him want to get close, touch it and even hold it in his little hands.

The child walks with his arms stretched out towards the flower where the butterfly is resting on, but as soon as he gets within reach, the butterfly takes off to land on another flower.

Determined, the child follows the butterfly to the next flower, and then the next, and the next… but no matter how much he chases it, the butterfly always remains out of his reach.

As adults, happiness can seem like a butterfly, always a few steps away… over there… out of our reach. To some, it may become an obsession. They believe that if only… this or that would happen they’d be truly happy. Their minds are caught up in the ‘if only’ mode continuously…. If only I had more money, a better job or my own business… if only I was in a great relationship, if my partner was more loving or my child was a better student… if only I could have the SUV I’ve been dreaming about, live in a bigger home or travel to Hawaii for a week or two… then, I’d be happy.

Even if they were to achieve one of their ‘if only’ desires, the bliss would be temporary. They would sooner or later get accustomed to what they got, and start feeling unhappy because they don’t have –or they want- something else. This feeling gives birth to the next ‘if only’ desire perpetually. Do you know anyone like this?

See, when you go through life feeling blue most of the time, you tend to believe that external events, things, or circumstances you want will give you the happiness you are seeking when these things happen. However, let’s realize that material possessions, circumstances, and events will just bring short-term happiness. These things will never have a lasting effect in your life even if you get to keep them for a while.

Just like the saying goes… “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”, if you base your happiness on things, you’ll always be chasing happiness based on things out there, “on the other side of the fence.” Subsequently, your focus and perception are always based on outer events, which will harbor feelings of dissatisfaction, discouragement and unhappiness in your heart and life experience as a whole.

Every human experience encompasses a mixture of pleasant and unpleasant circumstances. Because of this, no one should rely on experiences as a source of happiness unless they want to live in constant turmoil or experience the eroding ups and downs of an emotional roller coaster ride.

If what you want is true, long-lasting happiness, you must become aware of the fact that living happy is a state of  being, not a state of having.

Happiness is an inner condition that can be attained by all who truly desire to live in happiness most of the time. Yes, I say ‘most of the time‘ because certain unavoidable life events will bring sadness, that’s just a part of life. However, if your normal state is that of happiness, sadness will be temporary as you will recover faster from sorrow or despair.

There is no gene that determines who’ll be happy and who won’t. You and I are capable of becoming happy people and living happy lives IF we understand that happiness is never related to the world out there, but to the world within.

The inner contentment that allows you to navigate through the ups and downs of life has its roots deep within your being. Thus, the only true source of happiness comes from finding and embracing who you are as a person, and from there you can live a happy life overall. Finding peace in every aspect of your life is also important… the physical, the mental, the emotional and the spiritual.

Once you accept yourself ‘as you are’ and find peace in all of these areas, you get a sense of completeness in life; and the result is a flowing state of happiness.

If you neglect any one of these areas, you’ll experience a sense of emptiness. You may not be able to identify this nagging feeling right away. It just feels like something is missing. If this happens, it will be hard to get a solid foundation for building permanent happiness within. Like I mentioned above, many will try to fill this incompleteness by looking for outer stuff, such as the cars, the trips, the things.

This is the reason why falling into the elusive butterfly syndrome is quite common for so many people. They may get what they want and feel happy for awhile, only to discover later on that they’re feeling empty all over again. The feeling of frustration lingers and the cycle repeats itself once and again, unless they learn the secret to being happy despite life’s circumstances which starts with working on their inner self.

So… is happiness an elusive butterfly for you? If so, spend some time in quiet reflection. Ask yourself how you’re doing in regard to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your being. If you notice that you are neglecting one of these four important elements of your being,  you’ll know why you are experiencing a sense of emptiness within. This is a good starting point that gives you direction to modify or improve your life experience.

Remember, it is perfectly fine to desire more and get some things to make your life easier, more comfortable or pleasant, but do not confuse the euphoric feeling of getting things with real happiness.  Enjoy the fruit of your labor. You deserve it. But, do not let the object possess your happiness, ever.

The more you experience happiness as an inner job, the more often you will experience the butterfly of happiness landing on your shoulder.

Intuition

Intuition

Awakening Your Sixth Sense

Intuition… we’ve all experienced it. All of a sudden and out of the blue, we get a certain feeling and somehow we know that something has happened or that is going to happen… only to find out later on that our premonition or suspicion had been correct…

And how about when we meet a person for the first time and we experience feelings that have no real justification? Sometimes we immediately feel connected to them, and some others we feel a negative vibe. All of this happens in an instant, bypassing our conscious awareness and five known senses.

Intuition refers to the act of knowing that something has happened or will happen without the usual feedback mechanisms such as reason, feedback, logic, and without resourcing to the use of the senses from which other knowings usually and normally emerge. It is also called  the sixth sense and some link it to paranormal phenomena, and extrasensory perception or ESP.

Intuition can be experienced through three defined channels: clairvoyance, clairaudience, and/or sensing clearly. Let’s talk about each one of these occurrences.

Clairvoyance is a French word that means seeing clearly.’ It is described as the ability to gain information about an event, a person, a location, and even an object, through extra sensory perception meaning, seeing without using the eyes or the sense of sight.  Instead, it is when the inner eye –also called ‘the third eye’– is at work seeing what the eyes cannot perceive.

Clairaudience, also a French word, it means ‘hearing clearly,’ and it refers to the knowing, perceiving, or attaining information through extra sensory means, in this case a feeling through listening which goes beyond the auditory sense. This can happen when a person ‘hears’ something that is not perceivable through normal audition, listening to something not being explicitly stated or listening to an inner voice. This kind of intuition can also happen when a certain sound brings up an intense feeling, such as a bird twitting or even a never before heard song. Some clairaudient people claim that they hear spirit guides or receive communication from other entities.

Both, clairvoyance and clairaudience are considered paranormal activities that certain people with special psychic abilities posses. Some believe these are innate aptitudes that cannot be learned, while others believe we all have the ability to learn and use them.

The third and most common form of intuition is ‘sensing clearly.’  We refer to this experience as having a hunch or gut feeling. This is the time when we feel overwhelmed with a feeling that is hard to explain. The feeling can go from uncomfortable to distressing. Some mothers have described ‘feeling’ something has happened to their child who lives far away. All they can say with complete certainty is… “Don’t ask me how. I just know.”

It has been said that only some people are gifted with intuition. Astrologers even insist that people born under the Scorpio or Pisces signs are naturally intuitive. Others say that this ‘sixth sense’ can sometimes be so powerful, it almost borders on ESP. However, recent studies suggest that we all are born with this gift and that we just need to learn to develop it.

And why would you need to develop intuition? -you may ask. Why not let our emotional and psychological state as it is?

There are clear advantages to developing your intuition. To start, intuition promotes good communication, empathy and compassion. It makes us more sensitive to the needs of people around us and can keep us from hurting those we love. When you sense the feelings of your loved ones, you understand them better which leads to better relationships. You’d be surprised to learn how many people are oblivious to this!

A good sense of intuition also promotes creativity and expands the means for expression. Moreover, intuition allows you to awaken a healing power which goes beyond logic and even diagnosis. An example of this could be when a physician recommends a medication for a certain condition but something inside tells you not to take it, only to discover later that the side effects could have complicated the condition even further.

Intuition can also help you delve deep into your soul to eradicate hidden negative energy that may be affecting your physical and emotional health. It can give you cues as to how to heal yourself and what changes to make in order to live a healthier and happier life.

Having learned this… are you ready to awaken your intuition? Utilize these seven ways to develop your precious gift.

  • Hypnosis
Hypnosis can help develop intuition because it strengthens the connection with your inner guidance. You can access your intuition easier while being in an altered state of consciousness.  The good news is that having good results with hypnosis is not limited to visiting a hypnotherapist and watching a pendulum move back and forth. With dedication and patience, performing self-hypnosis through an hypnotic program works and can help you develop your intuition.
  • Meditation
Meditation helps you relax the mind and leads to finding the peace within. When you have a busy lifestyle, your mind is cluttered with too many things. In this state, it is more challenging to quiet the mind long enough to listen to your inner voice or feel your inner state. This is not conducive to awaken your intuition.Fortunately, there are many ways to start a practice of meditation. You can take a yoga or Tai-Chi class, or simply dedicate regular time to deep and rhythmic breathing that can lead you straight to Zen.  There are a variety of audios to help you do this. If you want to learn how to meditate deeper than a Zen Monk, click here.
  • Think Positive
A worry-free, fear-free state can do so much to improve the quality of your life as well as your intuitive ability. By staying positive, your vibrations are high. This attracts good energy that allows you to easily recognize imminent feelings and events that differ from the norm. Your intuitive ability is directly linked to the state of your soul and mind.
  • Let Go
When you are in a situation in which you need to make an important decision, you must let go of all thoughts, worries, and concerns to allow your intuition to surface and guide you.To do this, go to a quiet place where you can be in peace for a few moments. Sit comfortably or lie down and take a few deep breaths. Pay attention to your breathing without attempting to control or direct it. Just let it happen naturally and feel the air going in and out of your lungs. By focusing on your breath, the mind gets away of the usual state of jumping from one thought to another without control. We call this the monkey mind.
  •
From this state, shift your focus inwards and try to listen to the voice within. Ask your inner guidance what to do in reference to your situation… let go and relax. Go back to focusing on your breath and just be. Your inner voice will come out once you let go of all attachments and possible outcomes. You will know what’s best once the solutions start popping in. One of them will just ‘feel right.’

  • Get Out of Your Own Way
In all fairness, letting go in this fashion can be challenging at times, especially when the monkey mind has not been trained long enough and when you need a solution sooner rather than later. Thus, you may have to do the above mentioned exercise several times before you are able to clearly feel or hear your inner voice of intuition. One way to do this is to go out and do something different right after you relaxed as described above. Allow yourself to get distracted from the situation you are trying to solve or decide upon. Do not expect an immediate answer. Usually, intuition doesn’t work like that.  A hunch seldom falls on your lap immediately. Give it a little time and when you least expect it, the answer will come. Just remain attentive and you’ll recognize it.
  • Trust Your First Impressions
When you meet a person for the first time and you immediately get the feeling that he is not being transparent about what he says, or is a bit too arrogant for your taste, chances are that your fist impression actually holds true. Most of the time, first impressions are brought by intuition. You’ll later have an opportunity to verify (or not) your hunch. The more this happens, the more you will learn to trust your intuition. Be careful not to confuse intuition with prejudgment though. The former relates to a feeling, the later is based on opinion and reason.
  • Be Happy
Intuition and happiness go hand in hand. This is because happiness promotes personal power and such power includes intuition. Thus, when you are happy your mind is not cluttered with problems and challenges, so you can tap into your intuition much easier and faster.Let’s also consider that many lives have been saved by intuition alone. Such is the case of the person who feels like going home walking rather than taking the bus as he usually does, only to later discover that the bus had been in an accident. I’m sure you’ve heard similar stories yourself. I invite you to learn now Tom Justin saved his life by not boarding flight 182, here.

Developing your intuition is very helpful because it leads you to getting the right answers that you couldn’t have come up with otherwise. Having said that, it is my belief that we all can learn to develop our intuition and use it to our advantage… will you choose the path of intuition yourself?

Intuition is a gift that you already posses. You will be able to make better decisions when you develop and practice listening to your inner guidance. Dedicate some time to expand your intuition and reap benefits you have never imagined. When you learn to trust your intuition, it becomes your best ally.

Belief

The Power of

Belief

Belief… what a powerful word! Most of us have an idea of its meaning, but do you really know the depth of its meaning and what power it holds over your life experience?

Belief has the power to change not only your inner state, but the world around you. This is because when you believe something from the inside out, it manifests in your outer world.

You are the sole observer of your world so you perceive and manifest according to your beliefs.

Yes, it sounds like magic, but I can assure you it is not. After years of research, scientists are barely starting to understand the implications of belief, and even how it intermingles with faith. Let’s explore both…

A belief emerges from existing ideas that you accumulate throughout your lifetime. These ideas shape your individuality based on personal experience and the way in which you get influenced by the people and world around you over time. In this sense, the events you have experienced give you the understanding and knowing that become the foundation of your beliefs, while faith is based on trust and hope in things yet to happen regardless of your present circumstances or the world around you.

In other words, your reality may be portraying a specific situation that has nothing to do with your belief in what will happen. When you hold this belief with passion, self-conviction and inner knowing from your core, it transforms into faith.

Moreover, a belief can be taken with reservation; meaning, you can believe something and at the same time, you may not be 100% convinced of your belief – more on this later. In contrast, faith is total confidence and blind certainty of future events, regardless of what you see in your reality right now.

The Belief Secret

We all have beliefs about one thing or another, but not all of us have faith. As such, faith is much more powerful than beliefs. Furthermore, even though all of us have beliefs about one thing or another, it is a wonderful thing that they are not 100% set in stone, otherwise we’d be set in our circumstances for life.

Fortunately, beliefs are malleable, and we can change them at will. Consider that your personal growth starts and evolves as you change old beliefs. Once you discover that certain beliefs don’t serve you any longer and consciously acknowledge that they need replacement, you’ll start working on getting new beliefs that support your goals and that have the potential to impact your life in a positive way eventually.  To better grasp this concept, just remember something from your childhood that made a certain belief set roots in your subconscious. Can you think of something along those lines as you read this? Does it still hold its truth for you to this day?

And here is something more about beliefs… they can be either limiting or empowering. This insight makes a huge difference in the way you perceive your reality. This only means that there are no real barriers or limitations but only those that you have come to believe in.

Once you realize that you have control over this, the door to unlimited possibilities swings wide open and you will feel empowered to achieve or conquer anything you set your mind to.

Have you heard the story of the English athlete, Roger Banister? He became famous after breaking the limit of the 4 minute mile run. You see, for many years scientists believed that it was impossible for a human being to run one mile in under 4 minutes, but in mid 1954, Banister believed he could break that record – and he did.

Roger Banister participated in the Vancouver Games, finishing first with 3 min 58.8 sec, which earned him a mention in the Guinness Book of Records and the Sportsman of the Year award.

The interesting thing is that Banister was not the only runner who accomplished this. Once others realized that this was not only possible but highly probable, a new paradigm emerged. Thirty seven runners believed they could do it too and went onto breaking the same record in that same year!

Many more athletes have done the same – and even better – since Banister debunked the old belief. Think about what this means! It all started with Banister’s desire to change a belief.

Now that you know this… what if I told you that you can have, achieve and manifest anything you put your mind to ONLY by allowing yourself to believe? Would you believe me? And more importantly, would you believe it yourself?

Before you answer, let’s explore a few statements…

  • Do you believe life is unfair?
  • Do you believe your life is full of problems?
  • Do you believe you have the ability to excel at anything?
  • Do you believe you cannot dance because you have two left feet?
  • Do you believe you will never get rich no matter how hard you work?
  • Do you believe you don’t have the necessary traits to succeed?
  • Do you believe Algebra is just for Engineers to understand?
  • Do you believe

You can formulate more questions according to your thoughts, ideas and circumstances. You get the idea… Keep on asking questions like these over and over and jot down your answers. Some of them will astound you!

Whatever your answers were, realize that the common denominator in all of them is belief… It doesn’t matter what questions you pose to yourself in life, it is always about what you believe. BUT… beliefs can be changed; remember that… always!

So now let’s see if you can answer my initial questions… What if I told you that you can manifest anything by just allowing yourself to believe you can? Would you believe me? And more importantly, do you believe it yourself?

Your answer here _________________

Creative Visualization

Creative Visualization

A simple and excellent technique to help you create your reality is creative visualization. With it, you make a conscious decision with a solid intent to manifest the deliberately created images in your mind.

This powerful technique has been used by top performers and athletes successfully worldwide. Sales people are trained to visualize themselves closing the sale, and marathon runners endure mental training in which they are taught to use imagery to see themselves crossing the finish line.

There is no reason why creative visualization wouldn’t work for you. The only thing you need is faith in your powerful mind and in what it can create, plus a bit of determination and patience. So get excited and let’s learn how to use this technique effectively.

“Whatever the Mind Can Conceive and Believe, It Can Achieve”

~ Napoleon Hill,  Think and Grow Rich

Start by elaborating on one goal. It works better if you concentrate in achieving one goal at a time. Start by writing down a few specifics of the goal you want to achieve. Take the time to modify it and re-write it until it resonates with exactly what you want to see happen, details and all. Then, read it aloud every morning as you wake up and every night right before you retire. Do this for at least three days before you start visualizing. Make sure you are saying it with unwavering conviction and have faith that you will see it manifest.

On day four, prepare for your creative visualization. Set aside some time and plan to dedicate some time to your practice. Choose a quiet place and prepare to relax by sitting in a comfortable position and placing your hands facing up on your lap.

Take a few deep breaths by slowly breathing in through your nose, and slowly breathing out through your mouth, until you feel a slight tingling in your muscles which means you are relaxed.

Now focus on your goal and draw a detailed picture of it in your mind, just as you have written it and repeated it. Let’s say you want to experience swimming with dolphins.

Imagine this exact picture in your mind as vividly as possible: Visualize the dolphins and the blue ocean, hear their squeaks and whistles, smell the salty ocean, touch their soft, slippery skin when you rub their bellies, feel the cold water on your skin and look at the dolphins eyes to feel connected to them and the experience. Now, notice the happiness this experience is bringing to your senses.

Take the time to love every aspect of your experience as you imagine it. Bring it to life by FEELING every aspect of it and use as many of your senses as possible. Picture it exactly as if you were there!

One amazing added advantage about creative visualization is that you can feel and obtain the same benefits of the actual experience by just living it in your mind

Our subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between real or make-believe, so when you engage all of your senses in the “imaginary” experience, you’re actually making your mind “believe” it is happening right then and there. This practice will release the energy which will move the right elements to bring what you want into the physical plane.

Be patient and persistent. For some of us it may take longer to see results, but if you have faith and know in your heart it will happen, it just will.

You can apply the creative visualization technique to almost every aspect of life, from goal setting to memory improvement, from sports performance to weight loss, from self-healing to enhancing mood, from problem-solving to decision-making, and everything in between.

You can even use creative visualization to create abundance and prosperity!

Once you get a hold of it, you can visualize virtually anywhere and anytime. Just find a quiet place where you can be by yourself and not be disturbed for a few moments. I’ve heard some people get so good at it, they can do it while riding the train or sitting at the beach on a busy Sunday morning!

Remember… just relax and keep the focus on what you want to do, achieve or acquire. Add as many details as you can and engage your emotions. Simply keep replaying this inner film in your mind as if you were actually participating in it. And if you want to make your visualization more vivid and effective, you can create a vision board and/or state affirmations. These techniques will give life to your imagery.

Before you know it, you’ll be living it!

Self Talk

Self-Talk

How You Communicate with Your “Self”

Self-talk, inner chatter, on-going self-dialog, the little voice in our heads… either you are conscious of it or not, we all do it… all day long.

From the moment we are born, we are interacting with and absorbing information from our surrounding environment. This is how we grow up, by relating to, connecting with and learning from the encounters and events that happen around us. In time, we become creatures of habit and develop into the unique individuals that each one of us is.

Actually, scientists have proven that we retain in our brains every single thing we have ever seen, heard, read, talked over, touched, tasted, and smelled, much like in a huge data-base of information that keeps on growing as time passes; however, we don’t always have conscious access to it all. And that is a good thing in a way. Think about it! It would be mind boggling!

But, for better or for worse, every experience no matter how small, is still in there, recorded in your brain, giving raise to your uniqueness and affecting the way in which you think and interact with the world at large.

Part of that learning and adapting includes the development of self-talk patterns. Yes, we literally learn to have conversations with ourselves and in time, this becomes habitual. Most of us do it silently, but some folks talk to themselves out loud. I’m sure you’ve seen people who do this! 😉

As we know, the more we practice a certain thing and anything, the more rooted the behavior becomes. This is no different with inner chatter. However, self-talk can create extra burden and stress because we often let it run wild without realizing how it’s impacting our life.

This is not to say that all self-talk is harmful. Actually –and fortunately- most of it is not. If you need to pick your child at school by noon, keep a dental appointment, or getting up to speed at work, you may find yourself exerting self-talk around these issues.

Thoughts such as “I need to hurry up to get to my 3:00 o’clock dental appointment on time” or “I have to submit this report by 5:00 o’clock today” actually help us function as responsible human beings, and it is perfectly normal and healthy. However, when the self-talk becomes negative, judgmental, gloomy, or even cynical, it can be harmful and self-destructive.

Such is the case of the person that continuously repeats to himself that “I’ll never be able to lose weight” or “Learning that skill is just for smart people” or “I’ll never get out of debt because…” or… you get the idea.

When negative dialog goes on in your mind frequently, you are reinforcing this kind of self-talk that becomes –you guessed it- an habitual behavior. This kind of chatter creates, feeds and supports limiting beliefs. It is what keep people stuck.

As if that was not enough, the problem goes deeper than that. You see, your subconscious mind wants to please and protect you. After all, it is responsible to keep you alive and well, all within your comfort zone. Furthermore, your subconscious mind takes everything at face value. It doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong and cannot discern among reality and fiction. Thus, to prove yourself right, your subconscious mind makes every effort to bring your affirmations –either positive or negative- into your reality. Here is the sequence of this vicious cycle:

Negative self-talk plus persistence leads to habits which create limiting beliefs that give raise to self-defeating behaviors which affect your results that help reinforce the behavior which leads to more negative thoughts!

Self-talk directly affects your moods, emotions, behavior and actions. Thus… Your on-going self-talk is giving shape to your future, literally! No wonder self-talk becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy!

The good news is that we all have the ability to reprogram our minds for the better. After all, we are intelligent beings with free will and in constant evolution. The first thing is to acknowledge that something needs to change, and then follow up with persistent action. Let’s discuss this step by step…

The human brain is the most powerful computer in the world, and it seems as if it cannot be turned off. The average adult has between 55K and 60K thoughts per day! We spend most of our awake hours thinking… amazing, isn’t it?

Even now, as you read this, there is an underlying and subtle chatter going on in your mind, frequently several thoughts happen at the same time… stop reading this, close your eyes and listen for a moment…

The amazing thing is not that we are able to have thousands of thoughts on any given day, but that this activity goes on inside our brains in a wild and rampant way, and it remains unacknowledged most of the time.

Once you become aware of your self-talk, you are a step closer to identifying which of your inner voices is causing you more harm than good. Yes, some ‘voices‘ are more harmful than others. Feeling strange yet?

Now, the known mantra “Control Your Thoughts and Change Your Life” takes new meaning, doesn’t it? Here are the steps to transform your self-talk into a positive experience

  • Awareness

As stated above, this is essential to gain control over your self-talk. Dedicate 15 minutes each day for a week to just pay attention to your inner chatter. Go to a place where you won’t be interrupted and relax. Just observe what goes on within your mind without trying to alter or direct your thoughts in any way. Do not judge or give your opinion either. Just become an observer while you let your chatter run wild. Take mental notes.

  • Analysis

Now take a few moments to analyze the validity of the negative inner talk you just witnessed. Do you actually believe your thoughts are accurate and realistic? If you examine this carefully you may even be able to identify the roots of your limiting belief! To better explain this, let’s set an example. Let’s pretend you are looking for a job and you found yourself thinking that you were so nervous in yesterday’s interview that you’ll never be able to land that job.Do you perceive your nervousness like an opportunity to learn and grow, or like a challenge or even a threat to your self-esteem and future employment?

Do you perceive the experience as an opportunity to prepare better for the next interview or as a self-defeating behavior that you cannot control? Can you relate this limiting thought to something that happened in your past?More often than not, when you dissect your inner talk in this manner you’ll be able to expose the reality of the situation in a favorable way by realizing that there is always room for improvement, that you are capable of changing your circumstances, and that your negative though is never absolute.

  • Determination

Once you are more aware of your self-talk and do this on a regular basis, be determined to find a way to stop your thought process every time you catch a negative inner chatter; i.e. I use the word STOP or CANCEL and either say it out loud or see the letters in bright colors on the screen of my mind. A more drastic measure that works for some people is to wear a rubber band on your wrist and let it snap on your skin every time you discover a negative thought.

  • Affirmations

When you learn to stop your negative inner chatter as it happens, you will soon realize that if you don’t substitute it with something else, your mind will tend to go back to the original thought once the STOP sign is gone. This is when you need to be ready to affirm yourself positively every time you catch a negative talk going on in your mind.Let’s stick to the example above. If you catch yourself thinking “… I get so nervous when I interview that I’ll never find a job.” As soon as you notice this chatter, go immediately to STOP and soon after switch to “Every time I get interviewed I become more confident and get closer to get hired for the job of my dreams.” Even if it sounds fake to you, remember that your subconscious does not know the difference between fact and fiction. When you do this often, your conscious mind will eventually catch up and believe it as well.

  • Visualization and Focus

As you state the positive affirmation, see yourself in that situation on the screen of your mind. Visualize yourself being hired, shaking hands, filling out paperwork to start working, or whatever image that helps you reinforce your affirmation. Focus on this image for a few minutes. Feel it. Enjoy the feeling that this scenario causes. Breathe. Know that you will get the perfect job!Because of their automatic nature, it can be quite challenging to change negative thoughts. However, since false beliefs and cognitive distortions are learned behaviors they CAN indeed be changed. Just know this. Fortunately for us, there are new programs that facilitate these changes, such as “The 8 Secret Self-Talk Programs” that focuses on changing your programming wherever you need it most.

Above it all, remember to be patient with this process and practice, practice and practice, until it becomes second nature for you which will develop into a NEW and productive habit. All you need is determination, perseverance, and the right attitude.

Here are a couple of extra suggestions for you… A powerful self-help technique that I use until this day, is autosuggestion. I recently wrote about how this technique helped me when I was under stress during my student and College years. Also, the following video may help you better understand the mechanics of “negative self-talk“…
