Breathing is an innate physiological function common to all of us living beings. Not only do we take it for granted but believe it is not something that needs to be learned. After all, breathing is the very first thing we do when we come into this world and the very last right before we leave.

Taking this into consideration, it’s safe to affirm that babies are the most skilled human beings when it comes to breathing properly. Since they do not have present problems or worries about their future, they are mainly happy to exist and they show exactly that with every breath they take.

Why is it then that we unlearn how to breathe properly as we grow older?

As strange as it sounds, most of us do not know how to breathe properly. Shallow breathing –reaching only the upper chest- tends to be the norm for the majority of people, especially if we live a rushed and stressful lifestyle.

As we experience a variety of emotions every single day, each of these feelings generate a reaction that in many cases goes unperceived. From fear of disapproval and rejection to guilt, anger, sadness, worry and concern, these and other stressors create emotions that affect our physiology and the way we breathe, on a moment by moment basis. Just observe an angry person’s breathing pattern and you will witness this first hand!

To make matters worse, some people experience breathing problems due to already existing health conditions such as sleep apnea, allergies, excess weight, COPD, and asthma among others. When you add to these conditions the effects that emotions have on breathing patterns, it’s easy to see how many individuals are breathing-deficient.

When we think about these implications, the importance of proper breathing becomes obvious.  Even for people who are otherwise healthy, breathing properly may mean the difference between feeling tired and sleepy all day long versus feeling vibrant and ready to tackle their daily tasks.

Let’s review a handful of effects that shallow breathing has over our physical health.

Physiologically speaking, improper breathing causes hypo-ventilation which prevents proper oxygenation of the blood. As muscle cells are deprived from oxygen, fatigue, stiffness, pains and aches, sleepiness, and exhaustion become common.

Moreover, when brain cells suffer from lack of oxygen, the results are nervousness, irritability, headaches, foggy thinking, and difficulty with concentration and problem-solving.

If this is not addressed, this condition can spring into on-going lack of motivation and lack of vitality, and eventually it can turn into depression. As if that was not enough, there are some aspects of improper breathing that are not commonly known or discussed, even though these can profoundly impact the overall health of a person in a more profound way. We’re talking here about the spiritual, psychic, and mental aspects of breathing.

From the spiritual viewpoint, breathing is a process of exchange in which we ‘take in’ from the universe, and we give back to it with every single breath. It is a rhythmic exchange of ‘Chi‘ or energy, a basic and natural part of the life and world we all share.

And it goes even further. When a person breathes properly, he/she is able to take in and capture the energy from the surrounding environment and can send focused prana to a specific organ in his/her body with the purpose of making it stronger and more invigorating. At a deep level, we all know that a negative attitude can have a destructive impact in our lives. However, many people seldom stop to realize this and frequently allow external factors, events, and conditions to direct their lives.

Actually, we not only have the power to change our views, moods and circumstances as we go through life, but we have a responsibility to do so!

Do you have your own good reasons to change negativity into positivity? I’m sure you can think of a few of your own. Here are some of my thoughts and beliefs ont he subject matter. See if you agree:

  • When you develop a positive attitude, you tend to focus on the positive traits of people around you, so you become an upbeat person, which leads to the improvement of your relationships. Compare that to noticing the flaws on people regularly. Would they want to establish a relationship with you if all you can see is the “wrong”in them?
  • When you are a positive person, you become more productive. Positive people get excited about their projects at home and at work because they see the goal as an accomplishment instead of ‘one more task to do.‘ When you perceive your responsibilities as burdensome, you end up procrastinating and getting stressed which only further feeds the cycle of discouragement and negativity.
  • When you are a positive person, you become more attractive. YES. Positivity shows. People feel drawn to you as if you were a magnet. You beam good vibes; you feel good about yourself and about the world. And, it becomes contagious.
  • When you are a positive person, you become healthier. Regardless of the origin of aches and pains, positive people tend to heal and recover faster and stay healthier for longer periods of time. Actually, there is scientific evidence that supports this: when you have the inclination to savor happy moments in your life frequently, your brain gets re-wired as endorphins get released often. This fact positively affects your health.

By the same means, negativity is contagious in both, inner and outer worlds. When you have a negative thought, it’s usually followed by more negativity as you try to justify the first thought. If you don’t become aware of this, negative inner chatter  becomes the norm and starts ruling your life, affecting your mental, emotional and physical health.

In the outer world, when you feel pesimistic or negative, those around you feel your vibes and they either walk away to avoid you or react to your moods and modes, making it a vicious negative cycle for all involved.

Thus, being negative is detrimental to your overall well-being -in and out- and to the well-being of those around you. It’s even been proven that -all other elements equaly present- plants thrive around positive people. They are healthier, greener and grow faster!

Free Will and Choice

Stick with me and learn what might have been the cause behind your choices. But first, let’s start by defining the meaning of “Free Will”… For most of us, the term “free will” is quite familiar. It basically refers to a certain capacity that we -as rational beings- have, to choose a course of action from among a variety of alternatives. Pretty simple, but… what makes us choose one thing over another?

Most philosophers would agree that the concept of free will is intimately linked to that of moral responsibility. On laymen’s terms, acting from free will requires being aware of and taking responsibility for the consequences that our actions may or may not produce.

Assuming that most people in the world were taught responsibility, why is it then that many fall by the sidelines acting irresponsibly towards themselves, towards other human beings, and towards the environment? In other words, why do we do what we do?

The answer to this question may very well be hidden in the “Hierarchy of Needs” by Abraham Maslow. Maslow’s theory may help you better understand human behavior, including your own.

Building Awareness About Our Own Primary Needs

Psychologist Abraham Maslow first introduced his concept of the Hierarchy of Needs in his paper “A Theory of Human Motivation“, published in 1943 and later on in his book, “Motivation and Personality.” This pyramidal order proposes that individuals are motivated to fulfill their basic needs before moving on to get other needs.

Maslow’s theory dictates that these needs are like instincts and play a major role in motivating behavior. When the basic needs are not met, it becomes almost impossible to pursue other things in life or achieve higher needs.

The basic needs –also called D-needs– come up due to scarcity or a lack or something. These are physiological (sleeping, eating), security (safety), social (acceptance), and esteem (self-worth). Fulfilling these 4 lower-level needs is important in order to seek out higher awareness and achieve self growth, as you can see in Maslow’s pyramid above.

When these needs are met, it is unlikely that we create unpleasant feelings, conditions or results in our life. However, when these basic needs are not met, our choices might be affected (or biased) in spite of our free will. This happens due to our innate instinct for well-being.

The fifth level of needs is the highest-level of the pyramid. These were termed by Maslow as the Growth Needs, the Being Needs or B-needs. Once all the D-needs are met, the desire for personal development emerges from B-needs. These needs do not come about as a result of lack of something, but instead from a desire, a want, a pursuit of growth as a individual. From this position, you can fully execute your free will and your choices consciously.

The 5 levels in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

  • Physiological Needs
     
    These include the most basic and common needs which are essential for survival. Examples are the need for water, air, food and rest. Maslow thought that until these needs were fulfilled, personal growth could not be seek out and much less achieved.
  • Safety Needs
     
    This need encompasses refuge and protection. These needs are also crucial for survival, but they’re not as essential as the physiological needs, for one can literally live under a tree but not without water. Examples of protection needs include a desire for a home to live in, a stable job, health insurance, safe places to be in and protection from environmental factors.
  • Love Needs
     
    These needs refer to the feeling of belonging, love, compassion, and kindness. Maslow believed these needs were less crucial than physiological and protection needs. In other words, having friends and belonging to a group is important, but not before having a meal and a roof over our heads. Friendships, immediate and extended family as well as romantic relationships help us fulfill this need for company and acceptance. Also, our involvement in social, community or spiritual groups give us a sense of belonging.
  • Self-Worth Needs
     
    After these first 3 needs have been fulfilled, self-worth needs become progressively important. These include the need for things that reflect on self-regard, personal worth, social recognition and personal achievement. More precisely, it relates to the way in which we see ourselves and the way in which others see us; i.e. self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Self-Actualization Needs
     
    This is the highest level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the one from where human beings develop higher awareness and personal growth. Self-actualizing individuals are self-conscious (but not egotistical), concerned with self growth, less worried with the opinions of other people and interested satisfying their potential in their own benefit as well as for the benefit of others.

Synchronicity

In the winter of 2000, I experienced a series of coincidences in my life. Had these been random I would not have paid attention to them. However, they were happening so often and they were so obvious that it was impossible not to notice them. I was intrigued, so I decided to look deeply into their meaning and the relationship between them. I promise you’ll be fascinated at what I found and what happened next.

So there I was… set on a mission. My online searches and visits to the library increased, and one day I found this book by Carl Jung. I was so fascinated by the content I read, that I got compelled to study synchronicity more in depth.

Just as I was into this, a friend of mine who I hadn’t seen or heard from for a long, long time called me and invited me to a presentation at a nearby College. She said she was thinking about getting a Masters Degree in Humanistic Psychology and wanted my opinion. A couple of days later, we were sitting in the College’s conference room.

I was in total awe as I heard the speaker mention Carl Jung and his synchronicity concept… Wow! -I thought- Is this just another mundane coincidence or a meaningful synchronistic event?

Needless to say, I was hooked and wanted to keep going down the rabbit hole, so I joined the Masters Degree program right along with my friend. My life started changing rapidly. The more time I spent studying Carl Jung, the more synchronicities I noticed in my life. To be frank, at times it was kind of spooky!

Finally I was learning to “join the dots” and this allowed me to clearly notice and understand the events that had started showing up in my life way back in the winter of 2000. In a sense, I was feeling more awake…

If I was going to pinpoint one main thing that I learned as a result of this experience, is that I must strive to pay attention to little details, to be aware, to continue my search, to learn more about the things and events that happen in my life, before I consider them just a part of my wide (or wild?) imagination.

I’m sharing my story because I have come to realize that all of us have had synchronistic events in our lives, but not too many “pay attention” or stop long enough to notice them.

Let’s back up a bit, just in case this is all new to you.

Carl Jung (1875-1961), a Swiss Psychiatrist was Sigmund Freud’s colleague. He broke away from Freudian psychoanalysis after disagreeing with Freud over his theory which concluded that the unconscious mind acts as a reservoir of repressed sexual trauma which gives origin to all neuroses.

Jung refused to accept this theory and founded his own school of Analytical Psychology. Jung was the first one to talk about synchronicity as a principle that explains meaningful coincidences. Synchronicity takes place when two or more unrelated events occur in such a manner that convey clear meaning to the person that experiences them.

Jung stated that these two occurrences are not causally connected, yet they have a common meaning. He refers to these events as “acausal” – that is, they have “no cause” but similar meaning by their coincidence in time appearance rather than sequentially. In conclusion, the events have to be related to one another but there is almost no possibility for them to have occurred randomly.

Confused yet?

Let me clarify this concept using my own experience above. First, I started noticing strange coincidences in my life. Then, I felt the impulse to explore them a bit more and bumped into information about synchronicity and Carl Jung. Next, I had not seen my friend for a long time. My friend calls me literally ‘out of the blue’ and invites me to the College presentation. The presentation ends up being about Carl Jung and synchronicity.
Can you notice the meaningful coincidences even though these events were not causally connected? My friend had no idea I had been exploring synchronicity, and neither she nor I had a clue that Carl Jung was going to be the main focus of the presentation!

And it gets even more interesting… Jung also believed that there is a synchronous connection between the mind and the phenomena of perception and delivered his psychoanalytic theory of the collective unconscious from which we draw information that is not grounded on personal experience. The content of this collective unconscious is passed from generation to generation and shared by all human beings.

The existence of this seemingly far-fetched collective unconscious concept has been considered as a possibility as scientists have not been able to pinpoint a specific brain structure where thoughts originate from.

Let’s analyze this theory a bit further. According to Jung the collective unconscious contains archetypes -an original model after which people are patterned- that make us behave according to psychological realities and experiences of humanity as a whole. In other words, we are not born with an empty unconscious mind, but with characteristics that are typical and universal to all human kind regardless of culture, race, time and origin.

To clarify this idea, here is a simple example… a smile. Human babies are not taught how to smile. They just do as they are born with this instinctive behavior which is a reaction in all of us through the collective unconscious.

And what do archetypes have to do with synchronicity?

Jung explained that when a person is passing through a life crisis one or more archetypes get activated inside the mind. This creates an access for the unconscious to flow into the conscious with the intention to find a solution to the problem through the awareness of deep truths normally hidden from the conscious mind. And… these are the moments when meaningful coincidences or synchronicities are more likely to happen.

In my case, I was ready for a change in careers but unsure about the path to follow (crisis). My friend’s sudden call and my curiosity to learn about meaningful coincidences (drawn from my observation of them), eventually awakened certain archetypes that propelled me to further my knowledge and get a degree in Humanistic Psychology (solution).

I believe that when we discover and use the power of synchronicity in our life, we gain the ability to solve our problems more intuitively and creatively. To me, synchronistic events are like signposts on the road of life that point us in a specific direction and increase our chances to attain the best possible outcome.

Do you want more money?

Do you feel like you’re working long hours and you’re not getting any closer to your dreams and goals?

Are you tired of simply not experiencing the results you want no matter how hard you work?

Yes? Why do you think this is so?

You may not even be able to answer that last question, but do not worry. Most of us can’t, at least at first.

You see, most likely you are carrying around certain money beliefs that were planted in your mind as you were growing up. And those beliefs have become a part of who you are without you even knowing it.

For instance, did you ever hear statements like… “Money doesn’t grow on trees”, or “You must go in early and come home late before you can go in late and come home early”?  How about “The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer” or “You’ve got to have money to make money”?

Yes? Now, tell me… Are those your beliefs or somebody else’s beliefs? Stop and think about it. Even if you now believe those statements, did you come up with those conclusions yourself? Most likely, your answer is “No, I did not.” 

Considering this, it would be safe to assume that the root of all money problems is never money itself. Are you with me so far? Your beliefs about money have nothing to do with having to make more of it, saving more each month, working longer hours, getting a second job, winning the lottery, receiving a monetary gift or just getting lucky.

You see, money problems are strongly linked to your own beliefs about money. This is the main cause of this. However, lack of money also comes from other beliefs that are not directly linked to money. Don’t get confused. More about this in a bit.

For now, just know that your perception of reality is based on those old money beliefs that you’ve been carrying around, and the majority of those beliefs are not even authentically yours! They were implanted in your subconscious mind while you were growing up by people around you such as, your parents, teachers, family, and community members.

Some of these beliefs can have roots that date to several generations before yours. They have been “downloaded” from parents to children and so forth and so on. Know that these were well intended people that wanted to protect you, so no need for resentments here.

The idea comes from the belief (yep, another belief) that wanting leads to suffering. So be grateful for what they thought they were protecting you from, and be aware of the fact that fortunately, you have the power to change those implanted beliefs now.

Let’s now explore the non-related beliefs that negatively affect your manifesting more money that I mentioned above.

Think about this… your beliefs about success, rich people, power, professions and careers, authority figures, freedom, spending and struggle, all have to do with how you perceive money and abundance; and here’s the most important belief of them all: your belief about how much you truly deserve to have more money. Doubting your self-worth and your self-confidence can be a huge bock to make it happen!

Take a moment and think about this all… does any of those points hit close to home? If so, congratulations, for the first step to change anything is to acknowledge that something needs change.

From that point of awakening, your first step to have more money coming into your life is to identify your personal money beliefs, the ones that have no purpose in your life today. Then you must replace them with beliefs that are more aligned with your goals and the abundance you want to create.

I almost hear you asking… OK, I got it. I know what they are, but… how can I change those beliefs that got me stuck and are blocking my progress? And, can the belief alone in something turn my wishes into reality?

Please listen carefully… All of your questions come down to beliefs, yet again! If you TRULY believe in your heart that you can do something, then you can. As such, you MUST believe that you can eliminate your limiting beliefs and replace them with more empowering ones. It all starts with awareness and belief.

From that point, having faith in your higher-self and utilizing your mind’s power you can turn your wishes into reality. You can have more money. You can do, be or have whatever you want. But you must first believe that you can, and then go to work with that aim in mind.

These steps will help you with the process…

  • Identify the beliefs that are blocking you. Write them one one by one and leave a couple of lines between them.
  • Replace them with more empowering beliefs. Think of a way in which you can change every limiting belief into an empowering one. Use the lines below each to re-write your new beliefs.
  • Once your new beliefs are clearly stated, transfer them to a brand new page and read them daily and often.
  • Decide what you want to accomplish and make a step-by-step plan to meet each goal. Every time you get the feeling that you cannot do something, take a couple of minutes and read out loud your new beliefs.
  • Take action and follow through, knowing in your heart that things will turn out the way you want them to.
  • Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

You can definitely get what you want as long as you believe in yourself and in your goals, and you must follow through with actions based on your newly acquired money beliefs.

One important point is that your actions should be consistent with your values or you will end up sabotaging yourself. They must be aligned with your purpose and your priorities in life. And they ought to consider your talents and abilities.

Once all of this is into place, it’s amazing what happens next. Precise events and circumstances will be set in motion; you’ll start attracting people, situations and opportunities that will be aligned with your goal.

A word of caution, though… You must make every effort to live in awareness so you can notice these events when they arise.

It is unfortunate that many people miss the opportunities around them because they are blinded by their particular situations. Don’t be one of them! By sticking to your new beliefs and with a definite target in mind, you will ensure that your work will bring you closer to your goal. This in turn will fuel your motivation, and you’ll start seeing the bigger results you are striving for.

The Silva Method

While trying to organize my garage recently, I bumped into a quite large cardboard box with no label that had been sealed since I moved back to California back in 2007. I wondered what had happen to the label and what the mysterious box contained; stuff that obviously I hadn’t needed for this long.

Curious as I can be, I walked to the kitchen cabinet and got some scissors to cut open the tape. I was feeling like a little girl that had just gotten a gift. The contents of the box included a few keepsakes from my children early childhood years, and there at the bottom I found a binder labeled “The Silva Ultra Mind ESP System“… I couldn’t believe I had forgotten I owned this personal development masterpiece tool!

girl_with_headphonesAs I picked it up I remembered I got it back in the 80’s when I was attending College. My intention had been to develop better communication and studying skills, to become an excellent student overall.

I had heard about The Silva Method and somehow I got a hold of a Nightingale-Conant Catalog. There was no Internet back then, so I ordered the course via snail mail.

My Silva Method binder contains nine cassette tapes — yep, there were no CD’s back then either… I feel kind of old now 🙂 — and a workbook with a few notes of mine that brought up memorable recollections of my student days… Ahhhh, the good old days when my only responsibility was getting good grades!

I’ll get back to my story in a bit, but now let’s fast forward to the present moment. I jumped online to do a search on Jose Silva’s method and was very happy to find out that The Silva Method is not only alive and well, but the program has been improved tremendously.
