Self Talk

Self-Talk

How You Communicate with Your “Self”

Self-talk, inner chatter, on-going self-dialog, the little voice in our heads… either you are conscious of it or not, we all do it… all day long.

From the moment we are born, we are interacting with and absorbing information from our surrounding environment. This is how we grow up, by relating to, connecting with and learning from the encounters and events that happen around us. In time, we become creatures of habit and develop into the unique individuals that each one of us is.

Actually, scientists have proven that we retain in our brains every single thing we have ever seen, heard, read, talked over, touched, tasted, and smelled, much like in a huge data-base of information that keeps on growing as time passes; however, we don’t always have conscious access to it all. And that is a good thing in a way. Think about it! It would be mind boggling!

But, for better or for worse, every experience no matter how small, is still in there, recorded in your brain, giving raise to your uniqueness and affecting the way in which you think and interact with the world at large.

Part of that learning and adapting includes the development of self-talk patterns. Yes, we literally learn to have conversations with ourselves and in time, this becomes habitual. Most of us do it silently, but some folks talk to themselves out loud. I’m sure you’ve seen people who do this! 😉

As we know, the more we practice a certain thing and anything, the more rooted the behavior becomes. This is no different with inner chatter. However, self-talk can create extra burden and stress because we often let it run wild without realizing how it’s impacting our life.

This is not to say that all self-talk is harmful. Actually –and fortunately- most of it is not. If you need to pick your child at school by noon, keep a dental appointment, or getting up to speed at work, you may find yourself exerting self-talk around these issues.

Thoughts such as “I need to hurry up to get to my 3:00 o’clock dental appointment on time” or “I have to submit this report by 5:00 o’clock today” actually help us function as responsible human beings, and it is perfectly normal and healthy. However, when the self-talk becomes negative, judgmental, gloomy, or even cynical, it can be harmful and self-destructive.

Such is the case of the person that continuously repeats to himself that “I’ll never be able to lose weight” or “Learning that skill is just for smart people” or “I’ll never get out of debt because…” or… you get the idea.

When negative dialog goes on in your mind frequently, you are reinforcing this kind of self-talk that becomes –you guessed it- an habitual behavior. This kind of chatter creates, feeds and supports limiting beliefs. It is what keep people stuck.

As if that was not enough, the problem goes deeper than that. You see, your subconscious mind wants to please and protect you. After all, it is responsible to keep you alive and well, all within your comfort zone. Furthermore, your subconscious mind takes everything at face value. It doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong and cannot discern among reality and fiction. Thus, to prove yourself right, your subconscious mind makes every effort to bring your affirmations –either positive or negative- into your reality. Here is the sequence of this vicious cycle:

Negative self-talk plus persistence leads to habits which create limiting beliefs that give raise to self-defeating behaviors which affect your results that help reinforce the behavior which leads to more negative thoughts!

Self-talk directly affects your moods, emotions, behavior and actions. Thus… Your on-going self-talk is giving shape to your future, literally! No wonder self-talk becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy!

The good news is that we all have the ability to reprogram our minds for the better. After all, we are intelligent beings with free will and in constant evolution. The first thing is to acknowledge that something needs to change, and then follow up with persistent action. Let’s discuss this step by step…

The human brain is the most powerful computer in the world, and it seems as if it cannot be turned off. The average adult has between 55K and 60K thoughts per day! We spend most of our awake hours thinking… amazing, isn’t it?

Even now, as you read this, there is an underlying and subtle chatter going on in your mind, frequently several thoughts happen at the same time… stop reading this, close your eyes and listen for a moment…

The amazing thing is not that we are able to have thousands of thoughts on any given day, but that this activity goes on inside our brains in a wild and rampant way, and it remains unacknowledged most of the time.

Once you become aware of your self-talk, you are a step closer to identifying which of your inner voices is causing you more harm than good. Yes, some ‘voices‘ are more harmful than others. Feeling strange yet?

Now, the known mantra “Control Your Thoughts and Change Your Life” takes new meaning, doesn’t it? Here are the steps to transform your self-talk into a positive experience

  • Awareness

As stated above, this is essential to gain control over your self-talk. Dedicate 15 minutes each day for a week to just pay attention to your inner chatter. Go to a place where you won’t be interrupted and relax. Just observe what goes on within your mind without trying to alter or direct your thoughts in any way. Do not judge or give your opinion either. Just become an observer while you let your chatter run wild. Take mental notes.

  • Analysis

Now take a few moments to analyze the validity of the negative inner talk you just witnessed. Do you actually believe your thoughts are accurate and realistic? If you examine this carefully you may even be able to identify the roots of your limiting belief! To better explain this, let’s set an example. Let’s pretend you are looking for a job and you found yourself thinking that you were so nervous in yesterday’s interview that you’ll never be able to land that job.Do you perceive your nervousness like an opportunity to learn and grow, or like a challenge or even a threat to your self-esteem and future employment?

Do you perceive the experience as an opportunity to prepare better for the next interview or as a self-defeating behavior that you cannot control? Can you relate this limiting thought to something that happened in your past?More often than not, when you dissect your inner talk in this manner you’ll be able to expose the reality of the situation in a favorable way by realizing that there is always room for improvement, that you are capable of changing your circumstances, and that your negative though is never absolute.

  • Determination

Once you are more aware of your self-talk and do this on a regular basis, be determined to find a way to stop your thought process every time you catch a negative inner chatter; i.e. I use the word STOP or CANCEL and either say it out loud or see the letters in bright colors on the screen of my mind. A more drastic measure that works for some people is to wear a rubber band on your wrist and let it snap on your skin every time you discover a negative thought.

  • Affirmations

When you learn to stop your negative inner chatter as it happens, you will soon realize that if you don’t substitute it with something else, your mind will tend to go back to the original thought once the STOP sign is gone. This is when you need to be ready to affirm yourself positively every time you catch a negative talk going on in your mind.Let’s stick to the example above. If you catch yourself thinking “… I get so nervous when I interview that I’ll never find a job.” As soon as you notice this chatter, go immediately to STOP and soon after switch to “Every time I get interviewed I become more confident and get closer to get hired for the job of my dreams.” Even if it sounds fake to you, remember that your subconscious does not know the difference between fact and fiction. When you do this often, your conscious mind will eventually catch up and believe it as well.

  • Visualization and Focus

As you state the positive affirmation, see yourself in that situation on the screen of your mind. Visualize yourself being hired, shaking hands, filling out paperwork to start working, or whatever image that helps you reinforce your affirmation. Focus on this image for a few minutes. Feel it. Enjoy the feeling that this scenario causes. Breathe. Know that you will get the perfect job!Because of their automatic nature, it can be quite challenging to change negative thoughts. However, since false beliefs and cognitive distortions are learned behaviors they CAN indeed be changed. Just know this. Fortunately for us, there are new programs that facilitate these changes, such as “The 8 Secret Self-Talk Programs” that focuses on changing your programming wherever you need it most.

Above it all, remember to be patient with this process and practice, practice and practice, until it becomes second nature for you which will develop into a NEW and productive habit. All you need is determination, perseverance, and the right attitude.

Here are a couple of extra suggestions for you… A powerful self-help technique that I use until this day, is autosuggestion. I recently wrote about how this technique helped me when I was under stress during my student and College years. Also, the following video may help you better understand the mechanics of “negative self-talk“…

NLP

NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming is considered one of the most effective behavior modification techniques. It uses guiding principles, attitudes and methodologies that allow you to eliminate, acquire or modify certain behaviors in order to improve a specific area of your life.

These changes in behavior give you the ability to choose your intellectual, physical and emotional states of well-being at any given time. In turn, your life experience goes through positive changes to obtain the results that you have selected and predetermined.

The NLP technique was created in the 70’s by Richard Bandler, Gestalt Therapist, and John Grinder, Professor of Linguistics.

Their studies were based in the models of three successful psychotherapists, Fritz Perls (Gestalt Therapy), Virginia Satir (Family Therapy), and eventually Milton H. Erickson (Clinical Hypnotherapy.) Their research included the subjective study of language and a variety of communication patterns among successful and unsuccessful individuals. Bandler and Grinder noticed that certain people experienced life in a more positive fashion once they adopted certain successful patterns of behavior. These patterns were characterized by elements, such as tone, beliefs, values, behaviors and other specific language patterns.

In the 80’s, Neuro Linguistic Programming was considered as one of several highly respected tools in psychotherapy and hypnotherapy. Throughout the years, the technique has evolved and has had many ramifications according to the field in which it is taught and used. However, the premise remains the same… NLP gives you the ability to create a better life experience overall.

As you know, we become what we think about most of the time. You may also know that our usual thoughts spring from beliefs and habits we’ve acquired overtime. Unfortunately, some of these thoughts are based on mistaken beliefs which can prevent us from achieving success in a specific area of life.

This is where NLP can help by interrupting this form of thinking and then, by modifying the thought pattern in a way that is more supportive toward our achieving success. The new thought pattern will influence the decisions we make on a moment to moment basis, until the actions taken become second nature to us.

The Ultimate NLP Course - Discover the eight most powerful NLP techniques

This is how Neuro Linguistic Programing gives you the opportunity to become the architect of your own destiny as you reprogram your mind to experience your life on your own terms.

When you learn and practice NLP your life can change because:

  • Your experiences are more predictable and consistent with your new habits.
  • You are in a position to generate empowering states of being at any given time.
  • You are able to identify limiting beliefs and know how to change them.
  • You eliminate negative emotions at will.
  • You create your own patterns of excellence to follow.
  • You feel more inspired and upbeat.
  • You improve your interpersonal skills at work, with family, and with friends.
  • You gain insight and learn new paradigms.
  • You are more liked and attractive which opens up new opportunities for you.
  • You secure new and powerful communication skills.

What exactly does NLP mean?

N stands for Neuro. With its base in the central nervous system, it commands our five senses which help us experience our environment in a certain way.  For instance, we perceive the scent of a rose through our olfactory sense. The neural response is immediate because the scent has been imprinted in our memory and can be brought to awareness every time we smell a rose.

L is for Linguistic. It refers to language and all kinds of verbal and non-verbal communication which gives meaning to the neural representations we get from our senses.

Using the example above, we were taught at an early age that the rose has a pleasant scent; therefore, we communicate this to our brain as we perceive the aroma of the rose. This is a case where we use non-verbal communication taken from our learned experience and memory.

P is for Programming. This is the ability to alter, modify or adopt certain communication patterns with the intention to obtain a desired outcome. Following the same example, we could alter the perception of a rose’s scent by reprogramming our mind to dislike it.

NLP works because it is results oriented

You must have an objective BEFORE you try this technique. The goal is to target a particular situation and solve it effectively. For instance, phobias have been treated successfully with NLP. The process is usually short and fast. The individual had a definite goal BEFORE starting NLP; i.e. I want to eliminate my fear of spiders.

The amazing thing is that NLP can be used to overcome all sorts of limitations to improve any area of life by using specific commands to reprogram certain patterns of behavior in order to attain a desired and predetermined result. Once mastered, you will make new decisions based on your newly learned behavior which will bring upon the results you seek.

The NLP technique is powerful because it gives you the ability to create your life experiences at will.

“NLP may be the most powerful vehicle for change in existence.”

Think Right Now!

The Power of Thoughts

Thoughts become Things

We’ve all heard it. We become what we think about most of the time.  Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (1898-1993), considered by many The Father of Positive Thinking, said that this is a power we must develop as it is essential for happiness and success.

Yet, even knowing this, very few of us really pay attention to our thoughts on a regular basis. More often than not, we let our minds run wild without giving much consideration to the outcome we are creating with our thoughts…

What kind of thoughts do you have?

thoughtsThe easiest way to become aware of your predominant thoughts is to look at the life you are leading. If you feel mostly happy, it means you think happy thoughts often. But if you live in despair, you must be entertaining troubled thoughts frequently.

In other words, our life becomes what we think it is… a misery or a bliss… Realize that either way we are correct. It is up to us to choose one or another. Once we grasp this concept, we become consciously aware of the power of our thoughts.

Truth is, thoughts can either be our best friends or our worst enemies…

Is it then possible to master our thoughts? Can we learn to think correctly?

The answer is yes, we can.

Countless of excellent books and systems provide words of wisdom and clever advice that teach how to master our thoughts. Most self growth information can be insightful and enlightening as it awakens the inner power we inherently possess, and gives us the potential to master our thoughts and achieve unlimited heights in life.

However, from time to time, some of us need that extra push or a different angle so we can make this acquired knowledge work for us effectively. This is where certain tools come into play to help us get better –and faster- results.

Some time ago, I found and used some of the “Think Right Now” programs and believe they fill in this gap seamlessly.

These programs won’t tell you what to do because you most likely already know what you need to do. They will not offer motivation as you most likely have become motivated or you wouldn’t be reading this site. And they won’t provide you with a “one size fits all” type of solution either.

The “Think Right Now” programs (TRN) do offer accelerated success conditioning as well as thought and behavior modification –exactly the extra push some of us need to master our thoughts and take what we already know to the next level.

The TRN programs literally alter thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, habits and behaviors that you have acquired throughout a lifetime which may be hindering your progress or success and they do that without the need of subliminal messages.

girl_headphones

Yes, subliminal messages have a place in self-development; however, some people are hesitant or feel uncomfortable with the idea to reprogram their minds without “knowing” what’s been said to them or without consciously “hearing” the suggestions given in a subliminal message. This is where Think Right Now programs offer a different approach.

To better explain how the “TRN” programs work, I like to use the “brain-computer” analogy… What if you could “delete” your negative thoughts and limited beliefs with ease?

And, most importantly… what if you could “install” a software to properly program your brain with positive attitudes, success based thoughts and unlimited consciousness potential, and do this effortlessly?

It would be wonderful, wouldn’t it?

The “Think Right Now” programs actually force you to do just that, without the need to be motivated, have the drive or the will. These programs compel you to be successful by altering your thoughts which will in turn impact your emotions positively.

From there on, you are bound to act in a way that will lead you to success because all elements –your thoughts, your emotions and your actions- will be aligned and you will start living a 100% congruent life.

Mike Brescia, created these accelerated success programs based on his own experience.

Not too long ago, he was homeless and jobless but he never stopped looking for an answer… after much studying he decided to fuse two psychological change concepts and the rest is history. To date, Mike has helped thousands of individuals worldwide overcome blocks, procrastination and failure while changing their thoughts to achieve their dreams and goals.

The reason his programs work is because they are not dependent on self-belief, determination, willpower and persistence…. the audios and software create the needed elements to achieve the changes sought.

The “TRN” accelerated success conditioning audio programs and software work because of three distinct characteristics.

  • Suggestopedic Information Delivery System– You will not only hear the material but instead B – E – C – O – M – E the material effortlessly!
  • Releasing Unsupported Patterns– With 11 releasing patterns, the statements are designed to get you to stop thinking the old way. You will consciously believe in these messages and will unconsciously act the way you want to.
  • Installing New Patterns– Fills in the void with positive new patterns.

Here is a sample of the various outcomes you can attain with the “Think Right Now” programs…

  • Quit bad habits
  • Get rid of guilt, anxiety, fear, depression and anger
  • Increase self confidence
  • Feel happy and fulfilled
  • Love to exercise and lose weight with ease
  • And many more, all by thinking right now!

So here is what I suggest… if you are new to Personal Development, I believe you’d benefit greatly by reading some of the classics like “Think and Grow Rich” and “Acres of Diamonds” which you can download for free here.

But if you have been a self-development student for a while and want to take your Self Growth to the next level while mastering your thoughts I highly recommend the Think Right Now audio programs and software.

Either way, I believe personal development is a lifelong process, and a path worth exploring by every human being at any given time. And what better time than right now that technology has become our greatest ally to help us achieve our best with a variety of programs, software and products that not too long ago just existed in the sci-fi world!

You can become supremely confident, optimistic, motivated, enthusiastic, determined and happy with the “Think Right Now” programs. They can help you acquire the will and drive to do what you know you should do and to achieve what you want to achieve.

Aspiration and Inspiration

We all have aspiration to succeed in more than one area of life… we may aspire to have a great relationship, a prosperous business, a larger bank account, happier children, better health, traveling, a gorgeous home or a number of other things.

Spiritual Cinema Circle

As human beings, it is in our nature to aspire to absolute well being, whatever that represents for each one of us. One element needed to achieve any aspiration is inspiration. Somehow, when we are inspired, the world around us looks different.

This is due to actual changes in the subconscious mind.

When we become inspired, we tap into the true power of our minds, our consciousness expands allowing us to think “outside the box”, to become creative, to break free from “either/or” as we become aware that both options are indeed possible.

Uncertainties and inconsistencies are not longer threatening as they turn into opportunities to engage in innovative ways of thinking.

This is why artists rely on inspiration to create original pieces of art and inventors tap into their inspiration to imagine and create useful inventions. Writers and scientists use inspiration too, as well as the greatest thinkers and Nobel Prize winners of the planet.

The Master of Positive Thinking of all times, Norman Vincent Peale said that when we are inspired, we develop a natural enthusiasm that propels us to do the greatest things in life.

Where does Inspiration come from?

Contemplative observation of nature, practicing Yoga or Tai Chi, and meditation are some techniques to become inspired. Also, listening to music, reading moving stories and watching insightful movies are amongst the most common tools that can trigger inspiration.

If you have ever watched an inspiring movie, you certainly remember the feeling you got afterwards… and it is at that state when our hidden creativity comes to life.

Get Inspired and Transform Your Life!

    Vision Boards

    Create a Vision Board!

    It’s time to get creative!

You might have heard of vision boards in the movie titled “The Secret.” A vision board is a powerful manifesting tool because it is based on the premise that every project of value must have a vision. If you believe that your life is a project of value -and every life is- then, you can greatly benefit from a vision board.

tree_collageA vision board is a tool that allows you to bring to life — so to speak — what you’d want your future to be like. It does this in a graphic way that has a high impact on your emotions, and it concentrates it all in one place. This will help you see your dreams and goals in a more tangible way.

It will also help you regain focus when the going gets though, and when you are feeling discouraged for one reason or another. It will remind you of your dreams and your WHY; the reason you are pursuing your goals.

In this manner, a vision board is like your treasure map!

The power to fulfill your dreams starts with one simple step… your ability to represent those dreams in YOUR own collage. Don’t disregard this step as a silly thing meant only for kids. This is a powerful tool and you should dedicate some time to creating it. It’s been proven to work time and again.

It is a well-known fact that our subconscious mind responds better and faster to pictures than words. This is one of the reasons that vision boards work. Imagine this tool as your own energy vortex which instructs your subconscious mind on exactly what you want so it goes to work on your behalf and figures out a way to get what you want!

This will manifest itself in the form of ideas that pop into your mind — seemingly out of nowhere — or serendipitous events where you’ll happen to meet the right person, at the right time, for the right reason or project… it is truly magical, or what some might call luck.

And the good news is that creating your vision board needs not to be a complex endeavor. What you need before you start is a visualization session (or a few) in which you are going to determine with as much detail as possible whatever you want in your life. You are going to see this first in your mind. Picture in your imagination what is it that will make you feel fulfilled and completely happy. Take as much time as you need for this, days even, as it is the most important first step. Then, you are to jot down every thing that comes to mind and makes you feel excited in anticipation – whatever it is!

Once your list of dreams, goals, and mind images get clear, you’re going to explore a few options to create your vision board. You can either do it yourself or you can use an online tool for a more “live” experience. Let’s explore both.

If you do it yourself, you’re going to need a pile of magazines, a glue stick, scissors, colorful markers, and a large notebook or poster board. Set aside 45 minutes to two hours to create your vision board. Enjoy the process as if you were a child again.

Start by flipping the magazines and look for any images that resemble what you pictured in your mind during thehouse_collage visualization exercise you’ve been practicing. Also, go through your notes to assert your dreams and goals. It’s important to choose pictures that resonate with you emotionally rather than rationally. Once you have enough pictures, cut them in nice shapes and start assembling them in a visually appealing way that you like.

Move the images around to see what feels right before you glue them permanently. There is no right or wrong way to do this. Play with it and see what catches your eye. Allow your feelings to guide you. Once you glue your images, use your markers to write concepts, words or quotes that relate to the pictures you chose. Use your previous notes as a guide to do this.

Draw images like flowers, hearts, smileys, whatever you like. Use the markers to brighten your board; write motivating words between the pictures; and let your creative juices flowing freely. Once you like the way it looks, you may choose to frame it or hang it in a prominent place in your home or office, where you can see it frequently. You’ll be referring to it often as a motivator and as you move throughout the steps that will take you to the realization of your dreams and ideal life… and don’t be surprised if you see your vision board coming to life as you go!

Your second and -in my opinion- THE BEST option is to use an electronic version of a vision board for which you’ll need either a piece of software or an online tool. There are several options in the market. Look for one that is user-friendly, short learning curve, and above it all, that is fun to use. Here are the reasons why I like this option better…

    • Quick and easy to put together (Don’t like it? Change it in a bliss!)
    • No special tech skills
    • More fun to create
    • Lots of pictures to choose from
    • MUSIC!! Add your favorite songs to it
    • Utilizes more of your senses (more effective!)
    • Awakens your feelings as it is live
    • IMPORTANT: You can change it with ease as your goals change
    • Just hit play every day and ENJOY!

An online tool not only makes the process easier but more fun and enjoyable. It is also likely to be more effective as it engages not only your vision, but your hearing sense too! We all know that music is a powerful motivator – especially the kind of music that moves us.

More importantly, a digital version of a vision board will add dimension to your experience, as it stimulates feelings and emotions needed to get rid of old beliefs that no longer serve you, and to induce the reprogramming of your subconscious mind.  This means that it is very likely that you will experience more intense and faster results!

Whatever option you choose, I highly recommend you create your own vision board at once. It has the power to transform your life experience!

Once you create it, dedicate just a few moments to focus on it every day, especially as you awake in the morning and right before you go to sleep. In the morning it will motivate you and help you start your day with optimism and positive expectation. And at night, it will help reprogram your subconscious mind right before you fall asleep.

You don’t need a lot of time either. Just like exercise, consistency is more important than long periods of gazing once in awhile. This is not daydreaming either. As you focus on your board, KNOW that those things are on their way to you.

Commit to just 10 to 20 minutes of daily visualization using your board. It will keep your focus and motivation going, and you will start manifesting your desires in no time at all!

Should you decide to go with the digital format, I highly recommend you take a look at the Mind Movies 2.1 software. It is without a doubt the most complete and the easiest program I have ever seen and used. Click on the banner below and watch the video presentation to learn what this system includes – you are going to love the options it gives you as well as the simplicity of use, guaranteed!

    Enjoy!!
